Hello Mama's :)
I have two boys, one will be five in May and the other turned three in November. Neither of them had much hair when they were born, so I have no experience with this issue prior to my daughter. Makenna is 5 1/2 months old and has had a beautiful head of hair since the day she was born. Within the past day or so I have noticed that her hair appears to be thining out. I knew it was possible for her to experience hair loss and that it may even come in a different color, but is it common at this age? I would have thought it would have happened earlier on... what have you all experienced in terms of hair loss in your babies? Did they lose most of their hair at any one point? If so, how old were they when it happened? How long did it take to grow back in and was it a completely different color when it did? Thank you, in advance, for your responses!

My daughter had a full head of dark brown hair until she hit about 6 months of age. Over the course of a month she lost ALL of her hair and turned into a cute little cueball. It does happen, but I can tell you that it usually comes in fuller and thicker the second time around. My daughter ended up with a "dirty" blond look like her father has, and I have to say that I like it so much better than the brown hair she was born with. By the time she hit a year old she had the cutest blond hair with beginning curls.
Just keep telling yourself that it does happen and that the hair will be thicked the next time it comes in, and enjoy it when your little one goes bald because it makes you creative in regards to the use of hats and headbands. :)
When I was born, I had a head of dark black hair and when I was a few months old, it completely fell out and came back in blond. My mom said I was about three or four months old.
My son had a full head of hair when he was born. He lost most of it by 6 months (at one point he had so little hair that it would have been hard to believe he had so much when he was born) and it did grow back lighter.
I dont think this is outside the range of normal. If she experiences sudden hairloss like it starts falling out in clumps or all at once, give your doc a call because that is outside of the normal pattern.
She sounds beautiful!
One of my girls was born with a full head of jet black hair. She did lose some--usually babies lose from rubbing their head all the time since they cannot sit up yet. It usually grows back in as they learn to sit up and move around. My daughter's hair is now a reddish brown rather than black. It has changed over time. My little one was born with a full head of hair, went almost bald in the very back and it grew back in by the time she was a year old. Her hair was really dark but now could almost be called a light brown, dark blonde. I am waiting to see if it gets lighter. I have blond hair and my husband has black hair so my kids are in between.
My son had really dark thick hair when he was born. I've always thought it was caused by the cradle cap, but he did lose it. He didn't go bald, but it came back in blonde/strawberry-blond and pretty thin. It is only in the last couple of months that it has started to get thicker again (he is 22 months).
Our son was born with a thick head of hair and it was over an inch long. I read some where that the hair that they are born with usually falls out within the 1st 6 months. Our son lost his gradually and the new hair came in fast enough so he never looked bald. It came in the same color as before.
Both of my boys were born with gorgeous strawberry blonde hair. At 1 month, they both went completely bald. They looked like little old irish men! :) After 3 or 4 months, it started growing back in. My oldest's grew back blonde, and my youngest grew back in the same strawberry blonde.
Our son (now 3.5) had almost no hair (OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration) for the first 18 months of his life.
Our daughter was born with the craziest head of dark hair I've ever seen. As she grew, the hair didn't fill in at the same rate, and it looked like she was losing it (though she never did).
Just like the other mom's stories about their kids, it's very common. Unfortunately, at one point, because of my chemo regimen, all 4 of us (husband, 2 kids and me) all had the same basic hair cut.
Both of our kids have gotten considerably more kids as they've aged. Our son's really started filling in closer to 18 months (and much more in the past year). Our daughter will be 2 next Saturday, and she's already had several hair cuts.
It's nearly impossible to tell how it will end-up. My 21 month-old niece can't get past the mullet. She's adorable, and you'd never look at her differently than other kids her age just by her lack of a good head of hair.
Mine started losing his at about 4 mos I think and was mostly bald by 6 mos. It started growing back in at about 9 mos.
