Is My 19 Mo Old Ready to Be Potty Trained?

Hello Everyone,

Will try and make this short. My daughter for the past couple of months has been saying 'pee pee' and 'poo poo' when she goes. She is now pointing at her diaper (front for pee/back for poop). She says 'uh oh, pee pee'. I think she knows what's happening, but I think she's too little. She puts the potty seat on the toilet. I put her on it a few times, she says 'pee pee', but nothing happens.

Last night was the corker. She was in the bath tub. She sings and talks while she is in there playing with her toys. I walked away for a split second. I noticed she was quiet, then she started saying 'uh oh'. When I walked in...she stood in the tub and pointed to the floor and said 'uh oh'. WELL.....she had gone poop in the tub (never did this before...it's my worst fear). She had taken the poop out of the tub and put it on the floor. First I was mortified, then thought...I need to get her and her toys out of there, then I laughed. At least she knew that it didn't belong in there. After I cleaned her up and put her pj's on....she took her diaper off every time she pee'd. I put a onesie on her so she couldn't get to it. She is starting to get obsessed. I know people say they may be ready when they do not like to be wet. I'll be going through a million diapers a day at this rate.

My mom always says she's too big for her britches. A smartie pants. She also said we were potty trained by the time we were 2.

So, what do you think? Is she ready?

What can I do next?

Every child is different but if she is showing interest go for it. If she changes her mind then try again later but she seems to want to try now.

Hi L.:

I have two daughters (almost 7 and almost 3) Both were early potter trainers. My first daughter started going on the potty at 20 months. I worried it was too young, but then I realized that, if she's ready, she's ready! I would consider putting underwear on her and diapers at nap/bedtime. You can experiment at home and when you're out, bring an ample supply of extra clothes. She has so much interest in it that it seems that it could be the right time. Also, since it's summer, it's a good time to try and let her be in the house naked. That was how it happened with my first. Pee ran down her leg a couple of times and she wanted none of it! My second was going on the potty by 22 months. I didn't even start this with the girls myself, they just went for it on their own!! Good luck!

She's certainly showing the signs... My daughter was totally potty trained by 23 months - we probably started somewhere around 19 or 20 months. She took the lead for all of it (just like your daughter seems to be doing), but we went nice and slow. We first switched to pull-ups, and one day, she asked for panties like mommy. She's 25 months now and has very few accidents, but I still make her sleep in a pull-up even though it probably isn't necessary.

I know of someone whose child was potty trained by a year and a half, so it is possible. Sounds like she's giving you signs she may be ready. It can't hurt to give it a try! :)

good luck!

Sounds like she is ready. I found it helpful to time how long after they eat do they "poop" or "peepee". If you know that she will poop or peepee 30 minutes after she eats, then put her on the potty around that time. it also helps if you give her something to do while she is sitting on the potty such as a book to read. When she uses the potty, praise her highly, clap your hands,or sing a silly song. Consistency is the key. It might also be helpful if she has a potty chair that she is able to navigate herself. Good luck.
