Is Milk the Culprit Behind Ear Infections, Refusal to Sleep in Crib/vomiting

For the second time this week, my 1 year old has vomited her bedtime bottle in the crib as we waited out her crying - 10 minutes the first time, 2-3 minutes the second time, because we heard her throw up. Tonight, I picked her up and she continued to throw up a ricotta-cheese -esque vomit all over the place. (Sorry for the description, I mention it because I think it may mean it's about the milk.) Frankly, I don't know if the milk causes it or she whips herself into a frenzy over going to bed alone.

She had been sleeping through the night for MANY months until she started getting ear infections every time I turned around. A few different people have suggested that milk is the culprit in both cases...? She enjoys milk and cheese and yogurt, but in addition to the ear infections, this nighttime cleanup and trauma is no fun, and I'm grasping at straws.

We also just finished a 10-day antibiotic on Friday - she had NOT been throwing up during that time.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Sometimes ear infection will cause children to vomit because their equalibrium is off. Their ears hurt more when they lay down as well. So that may be why she doesn't want to go to bed. I do believe there is a correlation between milk and ear infections. My daughter was sensitive to milk and it caused her to retain the fluid in her ears after an ear infection so more infections happened because the fluid wouldn't completely drain. She had five year infections in a 2 1/2 month period when she was 6-8months. I put her on soy and the ear infections went away. She is now three (this june) and she has had ear infections but maybe 2 since she was 8 months old. Milk does cause more mucus in our bodies. Go to the two ear check and make sure the fluid is drained.

I am not sure that milk would be the culprit to your daughters ear infections, if I were you I would check with your pediatrician regarding that. Protesting is inevitable, but if she is so cranky she may still be sick. Believe it or not, it takes a while to get a virus out of the system and out of the house. A mother of 4, germs are everywhere. Also, something we moms never really think of, put her to sleep earlier, like maybe a half an hour. She may need that time to relax a little better. Night time ritual is good but start earlier. Play same lullaby music each time you change her for bed, this will cue her so that she may adapt easier to going to bed. That always seemed to be my key with my children, and now they sleep very well for the past 5 years we are still doing the same thing, same BBPB (bath, brush, potty, book,)ritual all to soft music. Good luck.

I 100% believe yes yes yes, my daughter ahd a milk allergy and had 12 ear infections even with tubes and once we found the allergic food it all stopped. Just know even if you test skin prick or rast test the test when the kids are this young always come up negative. Go by the symptoms etc like you are

Many schools of thought on this and if you talk to someone that has children with allergies - many are very passionate about removal from diet. I do have a child with allergies; however I don't automatically assume everything is allergy related.

Couple questions:

Your daughter wasn't throwing up during her antibiotics. If you are allergic to milk, it would seem that medicine wouldn't necessarily change your reaction to it.

What type of milk is she drinking? Did you just change her over to vitamin D at the one year mark? Did you do it gradually or did you transfer pretty quickly? These are all things to consider as well.

It is true, my daughter had 6 ear infections over this past winter and I took her off milk and wheat (along with her eggs and peanuts to which she was already allergic) and her problems with her ears have decreased a great deal! I have had her tested and she did have low allergies to the milk and wheat...low enough that the allergist said don't bother taking it out of her diet; however I wanted to see if it changed the ear infection situation...it did.

Talk to your pediatrician and see if they feel she needs to be tested. Maybe her system didn't like the transitio from formula or breast milk to the vitamin d milk.

Good luck to you! It is a definite learning process, navigating through all of these things!
