Is It Worth It to Pay More $ for 1-On-1 Pilates (W/ Reformer)?

I just went to the chiropractor and he said my core is super weak and causing my back problems (which I totally believe). He said I should come 2x/week for hour long Pilates sessions with a chiro adjustment at the end. My copay is $35/visit so that puts these Pilates "lessons" at $70/week. I am getting an adjustment 2x/week as well so it's a good deal but still kind of steep. So, my question is: for those of you who know Pilates, is it worth all that money to get the 1 on 1? Or can I just take group classes and acheive the same thing (for $25/session)? Or even better, just do Windsor Pilates DVDs on my own (free since i already have them!)?

What can I do next?

Is the Chiro doing the pilates instruction? If so, that sounds fishy to me. Does he have all the pilates eqiupment/machines in his chiro office? I would prefer to go to a pilates studio with all the equipment. Or instead of paying your co-pay to him, I would prefer to pay mine and get the help from a physical therapist.

He sounds like the reason that I don't like chiropractors. You can do pilates anywhere. You may want to start with a group class or at least a studio (not a chiropractor) to learn techniques, as some videos aren't as good at instilling that. How long is he estimating this going on? Sounds like a great way for him to make some money!

The point is to strengthen your core, according to him.

You can do that in many ways.
At the gym, in group classes, on your own with DVD's.... there is never only 1 way to achieve that.
Or, you can go to Physical Therapy for your back problems too... they will teach you what to do to strengthen your back, then once you know that, you can do it on your own. And not have to go continuously to the sessions. That is what my Husband did.

good luck,
Susan

that rate for one on one pilates is a great deal. BUT the whole thing sounds shady to me. watch out for those type of plans. I got in a lot of trouble with one just like with a chiro.

Check with the state board of medical examiners (they regulate medical personnel) to see if this chiropractor has complaints against him. He might be padding his wallet or might be a great doctor. I also agree that the one on one price is good but if you are struggling financially 70 a week might as well be a million. If it isn't in your budget it just isn't, find another way. The PT idea is fabulous. Also check with your local hospitals to see if they have a women's health program. Our here in Las Vegas (the St Rose hospitals) have a fabulous program that offers classes at great prices. They also have "scholarships" if you are in need and financially strapped. Good luck.
