Take him to the Doctor or call the Doctor.
5 days, is a long time.
DEHYDRATION.... is very dangerous.
When sick like that, they CANNOT take in liquids/food.
They may even vomit up even 1 ounce of liquid.

Time for the, Doctor.
You don't know what is wrong....
MANY things, can cause symptoms like that.
He needs to be properly diagnosed.

Cinnamon and ginger will settle tummy troubles.

Try this:
2.5 cups milk
1 cup rice
add a handful of raisens some sugar -- cinnamon and ginger cook about 20 minutes if it seems dry add a little more milk.

The rice cooked in milk is heavy and difficult to throw up. The raisens help bring back some potassium. The cinnamon and ginger help settle the stomach and will help with diarehha.

I would take them to the doctor to make sure they are hydrated well enough and not suffering in some way you can't tell. They may just send you home. But it's better safe than sorry.

I would make sure to keep the pediatrician in the loop. He could have a blockage of some sort. Don't wait until he's losing weight and too weak. It could very well be a virus but it could also be something else. Take good notes.

Water is the best thing, but drinking a full cup of water won't help if they'll just throw it up again. Try feeding them a spoonful of water every 5 mins. or so, then if they manage to not throw up after several hours, then give them more and do clear liquids. Most of the time this should work.

But I agree, take them to the Dr. Throwing up for more than 2 days could be serious.

Water is always good too. If there is vomiting...then just about anything they can keep down will help. I would not do soda...that actually dehydrates you! Juice is pretty acidic. See what your boy/girl can keep down.

No it's not true. If it's a virus, your little one will benefit from digestive enzymes. Go to the health store and ask what would be best for your little one. They'll know. Digestive enzymes actually break down the lining of the virus cell wall and can get to the active virus so the body can have access to it to fight it. Elderberry extract is also a good option in addition to the enzymes. It's simply food and is an immune booster so the body is stronger to fight. It also tastes good so your little one will not have a problem with it.

Hope you see relief soon!

Gah, it ate my response!

I'd see about a dr's visit. My stepson was 9 and ended up getting IV fluids from an extended flu.

At the first sign of a stomach virus, we switch to Pedialyte only for the beverages, and also do white rice and applesauce. Nothing else.

Is it possible he is allergic to something you are giving him? Anything new in his diet, or more of than usual?
I would probably keep him on the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) for a couple of days to see if that helps. Also, if you can get some charcoal, I'd try to get that in him (health food store). Also, probiotics. He needs healing in his gut, to be sure. Any possibility he's been vaccinated, on antibiotics, or anything like that recently? Those can mess with gut health.

It is not uncommon.

We had it last year....for over a week. I had one in the hospital because of some things that came up with it.

I would go just to be on the safe side.

They can even give him/her something to settle their tummy as well.

You mean you want to give him medicine, right? I gave my son pepto at that age and my ped said NO!! It has aspirin in it which could cause Rye sydrome and the body needs to get rid of the virus or bacteria and that is through diarrhea and throwing up. Use Pedialyte but only a sip at a time. Popcicles are ok as long as they are not too sugary and bland foods like toast and bananas are good. But call your ped anyway.

My doctor's office told me if they can't keep down water to try pedialilyte or Gatorade. Strangely, it worked. My daughter would keep that down but not plain water. Pedialyte is good and if your child will drink it great, but it's gross. Even I didn't want to drink it when I tried it (after my daughter refused it over and over again!) so I switched to Gatorade which is better than nothing!

If it is a virus/stomache bug, it needs to run it's course. Keep them hydrated and hold them when they need you to. My doctor has always told us to stop all milk products immediately and follow the following guideline:
Day 1 - CLEAR liquids only...Gatorades, Pedilyte, Chick broth, juice, koolaids, flat soda, etc. Once they can keep these down...
Day 2 - Add fruit...apples, bananas, etc (watch out for applesauce because that can cause loose stools too). Once they can keep these down...
Day 3 - Add vegetables...Once they can keep these down...
Day 4 - Add grains/Cereal...Once they can keep these down...
Day 5 - Add meats....Once they can keep these down...
Day 6 - Normal except no milk products....Once this is handled well
Day 7 - Milk products

If at any point the vomiting resumes, regress back to day before.

My kids usually skipped ahead and we would add fruits and vegetables at the same time. Also, if they wanted grains early I would let them but they had to handle the other stuff well before I would add milk products (hard to digest).

5 days is a LONG time for a kid to be in that kind of state. I would take him to the doctor to rule anything serious out. You can do popsicles, small sips of water to keep him hydrated in the meantime. I would not give any type of stomach medicine to a child that age.

Wanted to add one thing -- vomiting can lead to dehydration . But water will not hydrate in this situation (some have suggested water in a few posts below). You need to hydrate with some kind of pedialyte, gatorade that has minerals and electrolytes. Plain water will not do it. Good luck getting through this. It sometimes needs to just run it's course. Keep lots of fluids, clear broths, and easy to digest foods. Don't force eating, the hydration is the key issue.

WE had this nasty bug in October and it hung around for about 3 weeks. I so didn't believe my pedi that it was just a stomach bug that by the end of the third week, I made him test my son's stool for other possibilities. Of course, that was right around the time that it started to clear up. Color me embarrassed!

Anyway, we used pedialyte store brand A LOT as well as popsicles. He wouldn't eat jello, but that's another route for you as well as broth if your baby likes salty stuff.

One last thing that really got us back on track was an antinauseau med called Zofran. The difference was immediate, day of. He started being able to hold food down over night. By the second day his caloric intake was beyond normal. By the third day of the med, he was consuming about 400 calories more a day than normal in an effort to catch up from the 2 weeks of not eating and throwing everything up. I'm not someone that typically uses drugs with her children. But I was so worried for him, and I am happy the pedi finally talked me into trying it.

Good lcuk!

Not true at all. In extreme situations you can get him to the ER and get an IV in him and that will hydrate him right up. I always made jello when I was sick. Jello makes a coating on the stomach and always helps my tummy, even when pregnant... Especially when pregnant...

Drink lots and lots of water. It helps to get you hydrated. Also, when you do vomit you'll have something that comes up easily.

Is your little one still urinating regularly? If they are in diapers, be sure that they are having wet diapers. Anything else, time for the ER, because dehydration is dangerous.

Pedialyte contains electrolytes... so does Knudsen's "Recharge" drinks. (no artificial colors/flavors). Electrolytes help to balance the salt and potassium levels.

I hope this helps.
