My husband hates crowds and waiting for things. Thus, we don't ever do things like parades or whatnot and we've never done anything for the 4th. Our son is now 4 though and I'm wondering if we're robbing him of some memories. lol. Is it lame that we don't do anything? What are you doing for the 4th?

What can I do next?

We don't make a huge deal out of the 4th. My children have seen fireworks and depending on the day my son will either love them or be beyond terrified. We aren't doing anything either. IMO you're not wrong as everyone celebrates, or not, in their own way and you're not cheating your child out of anything.

Hubby and I never used to do anything for the 4th. Like you, we don't like crowds and especially trying to get out in all the heavy traffic when it's over. BUT ever since we've been raising our granddaughter (6 years and counting!) we do try to go to a fireworks display. We tend to go early, get a good spot to park where leaving will be easy and then get a good spot to watch the show. We find that we are gone less than 2 hours and GD really loves it! I think at some point, he will mention it and then the guilt will set in and you will probably find yourselves out and about!

I live in the lame lane as well and I'm OK with that. I have the option to go to a party 3 hours away but am just laying low and doing ye good old-fashioned cookout.

Now THIS is lame: I may actually use part of the day to study for my rapidly-ending class, since my husband will be home!

In the interim, I am enjoying teaching my 3 year old about "Namerca's" (her pronunciation of America) birthday and how we light her cake with fireworks!

I may take her to some fireworks but she seemed scared when she saw some the other night.

So no, you're not lame. You're like America: "Independent!"

Not lame...a 4 year old probably wouldn't remember much anyway.

Enjoy your holiday relaxing...when your kid gets older, he'll probably coax you into doing something else.

I'm with your husband on that one. I have horrible memories of me sweating it out, bugs, etc. The kids don't seem to care if you are having fun at home. When they are teens or adults they can indulge in that excitement on their own. We do go to a parade, eat now with some friends and see the fireworks from their yard, ahhh, so much better. To me however, ideal 4th is good food, and a good night of sleep.

Hubby works early on the 5th so our 4th plans are to stay home, cook a few meals and not do much! LOL But we were planning on going to see fireworks 20 mins away tonight until they moved them to tomorrow due to too much rain. That being said, I think we'll aim for fireworks in another town on Saturday....the problem is that they don't start until 930 and my kids are usually asleep between 730-8! So I have a feeling they will fall asleep on the way there and then wake up for the fireworks. LOL

I'm not a big fan of crowds either, but I still get out with the kids occasionally. Go anyway. It's only a few hours, and the kids enjoy it.

We're going downtown to watch the fireworks at the capitol on the 4th. On the 5th we're going to a baseball game, where they'll also have fireworks. On the 6th, we're going to the pool or a waterpark. On the 7th, I'll be worn the heck out and we'll rest.
