Is It Ok to Lift Weight If You Did It Before Getting Pregnant?

My sister just found out a couple days ago that she is pregnant, and worried about her job. She works for Mystic Lake, and they don't have to follow the same laws we do because it is on a reservation. The last person she worked with that got pregnant was fired when she got weight restrictions. My mom is telling her that if you lifted 100 pounts before getting pregnant, then you can still do it when you are pregnant and will be fine. I have always heard nothing over 25 pounds, and sometimes even less. I know that most exercise like running and stuff, as long as it isn't something where you can get hurt, is ok to continue, but I didn't think that would apply to weight. My sister doesn't regularly lift weight, and isn't in great shape, she just does some lifting at work when needed. But at the same time, if they can fire someone for not being able to lift, they probably could also for being put on bed rest or being on maternity leave... or even a kid that gets really sick, so even though they pay her well, maybe she would be better off finding another job before having that happen... though it is hard to find a job when you are pregnant. Does anyone know the rules for sure on the weights?

What can I do next?

I am a home health aid and I still transfered my person all through both of my pregnancies. I was told to "listen to your body" on what is too much. I never got hurt was up front with my OB. I was lifting about 130 lbs a couple of times a day almost everyday. Everyones body is differend and some can handle it and others can't I would talk to my OB and see what they say.

nothing over 25lbs...

no you cannot do everything like you did before...

however it is very unlawful for an employer IMCLUDING mystic lake to fire someone for not being able to lift something....the casion should be protecting themselves much better, and in my opinion there were probably MORE underlying issues as to why the other girl was fired.

even one th ereservations they need to follow state laws.

My OB tells me its ok to keep going the way you were unless you feel its to much at the time. I have a 15 year old sister that likes to fall asleep on the couch (115 lb.) and I am still in the habit of carrying her to bed just like I did when she was 2. My dr. says thats even fine. I'm only 3 months along but since I've always done it, I basicly always will be able to. If thats any help.

I don't believe she should be lifting weights while pregnant regardless of how fit or not fit she is. I would definitely consult her doctor on this issue. In my opinion, lifting a 100 lb weight is way too much for a pregnant lady to have to handle. As for being fired based on weight restrictions sounds tricky and bordering on discrimination. You might want to consult someone who is familiar with labor laws and whether this would be grounds for a lawsuit should it come to that. Definitely investigate further her rights as an employee. Maybe lifting weights is a big part of her job, but regardless, being pregnant shouldn't be grounds of being fired (which in my opinon, would be a form of discrimination). If anything, her employer should be able to find another role for her to fulfill while she's pregnant. Getting fired is pretty extreme. I agree, perhaps there may have been other underlying reasons why the first employee was fired....good luck!
