I have recently had to switch my son to formula because he has been having trouble nursing. So he is stritcly formula fed during the day and then he will nurse at night. before I got pregnant I had coffee everyday and it was a life savor. So since I am only nursing at night would having a cup of coffee in the morning be ok? I don't know what the time frames are for caffein in your system. Thanks in advance for the responses.

What can I do next?

My doc told me one or two cups of coffe a day doesn't harm. I been drinking one cup of coffe every day for the last 3 years and my kids are just perfect healthy and calm babies as can be.

My opinion is yes, a cup of coffee in the am is just fine. If you do some research, it will tell you the recommended allowance of caffeine while nursing. Assuming you are having one "normal" size cup of coffee, you will likely be nowhere near the daily allowance for your daily caffeine intake. So, just be sure to drink plenty of water and enjoy your morning joe!

*I am currently nursing my son, and unlike Jaimee, I tremble if I DON'T have my morning Starbucks! ;)

I drank two cups of coffee in the morning, every morning, the entire time I nursed. If I had noticed it affecting our daughter, I would have cut down or cut it out, but she seemed fine and it didn't affect her sleep or naps. Believe me, I needed those cups!! I say one cup is totally fine.

My doctor told me that as long as I only drink as much caffeine as I did before I was pregnant, it was fine to drink it while nursing. :-)

One cup will not mess anything up or contaminate your milk :D

I drank coffee while nursing. Seriously first feeding of the morning would equal a cup of Joe for mom. Simultaneously. Some babies may be more sensitive to caffiene but it never seemed to affect mine. Maybe because I drank coffe while pregnant too. Your fine. Brew a nice strong cup :) I think coffee and motherhood go hand in hand out of necessity.

I know exactly how you feel about that glorious ground bean.
No two systems work the same. If your urine smells of coffee then it is still very active in your system. In science classes they tell teenagers that it takes 12 hours or something like that for a meal to clear the digestive track but many people have slow metabolisms and it could be more than a day.
I switch to tea when I have to take a homeopathic remedy. It is known that many persons can get away with coffee after a homeopathic or using certain one. But, to antidote a remedy is a great risk when you need to cure you of allergies or an inborn condition. So rather than ruin a well picked remedy I lay off coffee and substitute two cups of black tea.
It works. I use organic tea because the normal tea is full of fungucide and herbicide that just cannot be good for my health.

Well frist why will you nurse him at night and formula during the day ?? Is best the other way around !! Way because the formula takes time to digest so he will sleep longer during the night : ) that will give you the zzzz you need try not to have so much of caffeine that will diminish your breast milk i have a 2m old baby boy so i know what am telling you also try similac sesitive ( not the one with soy ) is the best thing ever no gas ect it work for him real good !! Let me know how it goes.

I have read that one cup a day is fine! Its when you have several is when you will have problems. Also watch you soda intake too. I just dealt with cutting caffeine with my son and I was amazed with the difference in his mood.

I don't normally drink coffee at all but I do breastfeed and I had something at Starbucks which had me trembling all day...LOL It didn't affect my son at all. And he's super sensitive to what I eat. I nurse him 3 times a day at 14 months. I hope that helps.

Who cares about the caffeine!! You need to have a professional help you with your son's latch!! A IBCLC, or well versed LC will be able to tell you what's wrong, maybe he's tongue tied or a lazy latch... Once you are nursing back to full time - yes of course a coffee a day should be alright. Moderation is key - especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding and trying to lose weight.
