Is It Just My Boys?

Donovan, our 8 y/o, is very picky about how his pants fit. This morning we discussed the ways he tests to see if they are good pants. He does the hands in the pocket jingle the change type thing. Then he says the best test is the run test. I asked what that was? He said he runs really fast from the bedroom to the living room and back. If they don't fall down they are good pants!
I can't argue with the logic on that! :P
But the thing is, my other son (12) is the same way. They are both REALLY fussy about clothes and the way they fit to the point where I don't even suggest clothes anymore because if they can't find something that fits PERFECTLY, half their day is ruined! They get unreasonably cranky about this. They both have a closet FULL of clothes that they refuse to wear because it doesn't fit "right"
Does anyone else have this problem?

What can I do next?

My sons are the same way... my 3 year old has to have them 'smashed' the perfect way or he will throw a terror fit and literally undress himself in the carseat.

I had sensory issues with clothing as a child, and actually still do as an adult though I'm able to tolerate it better. I would just get rid of the clothes they wont wear and give them an allowance so they can contribute to buying their own.... and not buy them anything new. Then they may be better at picking out clothes they do wear from the beginning.

My friends dd will only wear pants with elasticated waists. She won't wear jeans at all, just leggings and she also refuses to wear all underwear!!! YIKES. So she is never allowed to wear skirts or dresses unless she has leggings on underneath. lol

So funny.

My late Dad, was a real stickler about how his clothes fit.
As an adult who was successful, he only bought GOOD clothing.
Even had some tailored for himself.
He just 'appreciated' good well made clothes.
It was just him.
Not anything "wrong" with him.
Just his taste in clothing and he KNEW what he liked.

Your story brought back a fond memory of my late Dad.
I can see him doing what your sons do, to 'test' their clothing.
:)

It's a sensory issue but nothing to get freaked out about. Everyone has them, its just how bad they are and if they impact their lives. Most kids seem to have "something", often its clothing related. You might want to consult with an occupational therapist since you say they get "unreasonably cranky" and that must get annoying. In the meantime, have them take a greater role in picking out their clothes adn return the stuff they wont wear. Only buy clothes that they pick out though in the meantime.

My son wore a uniform until he went to high school. Uniforms are GREAT, white shirt, blue cords and sweater. Even then, boys especially manage to rip their pants playing and climbing. The cords were expensive and so thick you would think they would not rip so easily...but he managed,

When he started wearing regular cloths he was so particular that he once told me that I wasn't doing his laundry the way he liked, so I let him take over and he can really do laundry! I think I do a nice job, but he better at it.

I think you should teach your 12 year old how to do laundry and take care of his things and he can teach you little one!

Blessings.....

My eight year old wont wear pants that are not straight skinny legs he has a drawer full of jeans that he wont wear- even for "play clothes" because the legs are too wide- really he wears 3 pairs of pants WHEN I can get him to wear pants we have an almost daily fight over not wearing shorts in the middle of the winter. My oldest(14) will not wear anything that might have the slightest mark on it. If he has spilled something and there is even a shadow or a pen mark he wont wear it. His jeans have to fit "just right" not to tight not to baggy if they are either they dont get worn. Dont even get me started on their shoes...
Oh my answer nope it is not just your boys

K.,
Many children (including mine) are like this. Don't jump on the "sensory disorder" bandwagon! Your boys are fine.

First, have a garage sale (or sell online) all of the good clothes they refuse to wear. Then use the money to take them clothes shopping so they can test them at the store and you will only have clothes that are comfortable for them.

The joys of parenting! ; )

Blessings,
J.

To a certain extent yes. Boys like to be comfortable. Mine will only wear wind pants. They hate jeans/cargos or dress pants and only wear them if I make them. I have given up the fight on that.

my sitter had a boy who would only wear elastic pants. ONLY. it wasn't that he didn't know how to or couldn't zip/snap, he just had a preference. she let it go. it made it a challenge at times. but i WOULD take them shopping with you - and when you find ones they like, buy like five!!

Wow. This was sure news to me! :) I haven't known any boys like this in my life, but perhaps it's common with this generation of kids.

Yes my five year old cant stand it if his pants are a teeny tiny bit loose in the waist, my DH gets mad at me cuz he's the one in charge of getting him dressed for school and sometimes he rejects the jeans we've put out as too loose. I tell him to jump up and down and see if they fall down and they dont but not good enough for him, I'll suggest the run test. He prefers "noisy pants" to jeans (track pants) He tests out shoes with the how fast can he run test! Just be glad your 12 yr old isnt wearing the loose, low riding show your boxers pants!

my daughter is this way. I have to let her help find clothes in the store because everything feels itchy or doesn't fit here or there, or the sparkles hurt, argggg... i can't buy anything without her there. I tried a few weeks ago and surprised her with brown shorts and a cute blouse. She says "thank you mommy, but i don't do brown." Excuse me? you don't "do" brown? LOL

She is 6! This is the first Color issue we have had, but we struggle everyday with how things feel...some kids are just that way. Its tough...

my youngest son is also very particular. Got worse around you son's age (8). He is particular about fabric too. He is now 14, so I understand your frustration. Drives me crazy. He has other "sensory" issues about noise. He isn't autistic, but does have some autistic tendencies. Not much I have been able to do about it. It kills me to have to give away good clothes that his brother wore and buy new ones. This is just one battle I chose not to fight. I have seen an improvement the last go round of trying on handme downs. Only piles of too tight, no fabric issues.

I think a lot of kids are like this... I had issues with socks when I was little! That little line by my toes had to be strait and they had to be really tight so they weren't loose in my shoes. I remember this vividly, so I would take it with a grain of salt. It is probably just something most kids go through =)

My 8 year old son will only wear sweat pants or jogging type pants and absolutely no jeans!! It drives me crazy! When we go some where wear he can not wear sweat pants, he has a fit. He tells me that his pants must be soft and comfy! I think little boys look so cute in jeans, I wish my little guy would wear them! So, yes my little man is picky about his pants as well!!
