Illnesses should be reported after 3 or more cases but lice doesn't fall under illness, so no I don't think it has to be reported.
an incident of head lice or is it just common courtesy? I received a phone call from another mom (also a teacher) who told me my daughter may have been exposed to another child with head lice and this was just a head's up. I understand protecting the anonimity of the child/ family involved b/c some parents can be relentless, but I would have expected a note, sign on the door, or something giving a head's up of the incident (parents were not supposed to be made aware, but she called me since we're friends and since my dd has so much hair). It's not like we can place blame, it happens, but it is disgusting and I'd like to know just so I can pay attention to my daughter for symptoms of the little buggers in her hair. My son is in daycare part-time and last year there was exposure to the flu in his room/ daycare so they sent a note home just making us aware. Is it a requirement or just courtesy?

its not manditory just a common courtesy. Our school usually sends a note out after 3 cases have happened with in a short amount of time. Otherwise at the begining of the year they send a note home with the kids and ask parents to always be on the look out for lice as it is a common thing for kids to get.
Not in Virginia. It's a courtesy call because the lice, while "contagious" aren't considered a "disease"...
It was always reported if they were spotted in my children's classes, but only to the children in that class. Recently in our local schools, if a few classes are involved, the whole school gets a notice. Whether it's required or not, I think it may be something you could bring up to the principal/director, as: "Now that hat and coat season is here, I'm wondering what your policies regarding headlice are? I am interested in parent notification so that we might all helpful as soon as possible." Best of luck.
I don't know, but I'd sure want a head's up so I could be checking my child's head...
Missouri requires a generic note be sent home. "Their has been a reported case of head lice in your childs class." The daycare is to take proactive messures to clean. If this child was in your daughter class the carpets all need to be cleaned, cots wiped down, play clothes laundered, stuffed animals removed and bagged for the required amount of time. Sounds like the school is trying to avoid the situation where as the teacher did the right thing. I'd take this up with the directer. And let her know if she dosn't take the right action the center may be responsible for any bills you occure because of their neglect.
Hmm...I let my license go YEARS ago, so I don't know. I think it's just a courtesy. But I would do it in a heartbeat.
It is required by the health dept in our area. Call them to ask . Good luck ;)
No idea if its required, but my son's preschool does and I would insist on it with the powers that be at your kid's school. No need to name names but parents should be made aware.
Probably depends on whether there was actually a child AT preschool with lice or just a child who attends the school who NOW has lice.
If they found it at the school, I'll bet there'd be a sign on the door... but if the parents just called the school to say "suzie has lice, we're keeping her home to treat it... fyi" Maybe they don't have to post the note.
I really don't know. Just thinking.

They posted a sign at our school and made all the kids follow various protocol to avoid spreading it - e.g. coats in plastic bags, no rugs in the room, all costumes/hats out, etc. Not sure if it was mandatory, but it certainly is a major courtesy!
I would not have necessarily known we had it if someone hadn't told us their kids had it. Those little buggers can be tough to spot if you don't know what you're looking for. The minute my son told me his head was really itchy I was like, "Oh s...t!"
