The softening is absolutely normal. The color is a little concerning. Has she eaten anything that contains a blue dye? Fruit snacks, grape flavored ice pops, grape juice? If not, I would call the nurse just to make sure it's ok.
Hi, Moms-
My 14 month old daughter is definitely teething right now. She is very fussy, won't eat very much, chewing on her fingers, and has a runny nose. Last night she also started having very soft clay-colored stools that smell really bad. I know diarrhea as a symptom of teething is a much debated topic. Some doctors believe this is normal and others don't. What I want to know is if any of you moms have experienced this. If so, is it normal that they are clay-colored? Or do you have any idea what would be causing this? Thanks so much, Moms.
Julie, Stephanie, Denise, and Jodie - Thank you so much for your responses. I feel much better now knowing this is normal and happens to other kids. With this being my first child, I tend to worry alot. So, thank you for the peace of mind.

Soft stools/diarrhea was common with my son when he was teething. As for the clay color--who knows? I do know that I used to find ALL kinds of surprises in his diaper. Diet really affects the hue! LOL
I don't know about the clay color, but I definitely believe that diarrhea is a symptom of teething. It also seems like stool and urine become more acidic during teething. I'd keep Balmex on her at every change to prevent diaper rash until this period of teething passes.
Good luck!!
Completely agree with PP!! The color could be caused by the extra acidity as well as excess saliva ( again, topic of debate!). But I do believe it's a symptom. Happened with BOTH my kiddos.
Hugs! Teething babies are no fun!
