Is He REALLY That Hungry?

My almost 9mo. old seems to be going through a major growth spurt. That being said, it seems like all I do is feed him. The problem seems to be worse at bed time. He usually gets one 8oz bottle (formula) and then will go right down (8pm), but lately he's screaming for more so I've also been giving him an additional 4oz. of formula. I know that seems a bit excessive but he drinks it. I've also increased his food during the day thinking that might help but he's still screaming for/taking the additional 4oz at night. Is this normal? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks moms!!

What can I do next?

ARe you feeding him solids. If all he gets is formula, then that is why he's hungry. If you are feeding him finger foods and cereal plus the formula...then he might just be a big eater. Get a deep freezer for the teenage years. :)

From what I've heard, this seems normal. Especially if he was going to sleep without the extra formula before and is screaming for it now. If he goes to sleep after having the extra, then it must be that he's hungry.

Hi, N.! Sounds like your little guy may just be hungry, but maybe check with your pediatrician. I had a friend whose daughter seemed to be hungry like that all the time, and it turned out she had a little bit of reflux. Once they got that under control (easily, don't panic), she went back to eating more "normal" amounts, whatever "normal" is. :) Not trying to upset you or worry you, but just a suggestion to look into since you are concerned.

Best of luck!

if he's eating solids then try yogurt with a little ceral mixed in at night. To this day--and our kids are 7 and 5-- they still have yogurt at night because the yogurt works best. It is milk so it has the sleep inducing quality you want plus the little bit of cereal will help him through the night. Consider asking your doc before you put cereal in a bottle..it can cause choking. (BTW-- if he isn't eating solids yet it might be time to start introducing them if he's at the max amount of formula)

My oldest son was the same way. Oftentimes, he would drink 2 eight ounce bottles back to back and then be hungry again for his next regular feeding. He may in fact need all that formula for his growth and metabolism. My son has always been a fast grower and a big boy. He is 14 now and is just under 6 feet tall and about 145 pounds, and I still have trouble keeping enough food around for him!

My boys are big eaters, too. When my oldest was his age, I had to give him a bottle with his dinner AND an hour or so later before bedtime.

Have you talked to your doctor? It sounds like his little tummy doesn't tell him when it's full. I've heard your words out of the mouths of mothers of those very obese children you see on T.V. sometimes. My heart really goes out to them ! But talk to the doctor. Babies often go thru growth spirts, and do eat more..and they do get pudgie ( baby fat) These things are very normal. My own daughter had triple chins as an infant but grew to be a thin adult.. My son..hungry ALL the time.. stayed a thin child until puberty set in.. then he gained the weight. Your child might just be who he is.. but check with your doctor, make sure..It really sounds like you're concerned. That's a good mom in my book!

if he's hungry feed him. maybe oatmeal or something heavier at night.

at 9 mo i don't think they eat for reasons other than hunger

That may be a little too much milk. Did did his ped. say anything about adding a couple of tablespoons of rice cereal or something to his bottle?

Both of my kids ate through the night until 18 months of age, but then they just had bad sleep habbits after that LOL. My kids wanted at least one two bottles throughout the night at your son's age, and they were both huge kids. My son was wearing 18 months size at 9 months old as was my daughter. My son did not slow down until two. My daughter turned two in August, and is showing no signs of slowing down. She is 38 inches tall and 4T's are fitting her perfectlt right now. Point is I think it is perfectly normal, could be a growth spurt, could just be he wants the extra attention. I'd maybe wait another week or so, and if it is still continuing, the maybe get hima special toy for bed time only, that will maybe keep his interest...?

It doesn't sound unusual at all to me. We all have different needs. If he screams continuously after he eats then he might have a problem. Then you get worried. But if it satisfies him then go ahead. 4 oz. really doesn't sound like a lot to me. I just fed my children (nutritious of course) whatever they seemed to need. Believe me, they let you know when they have had enough. Now if he screams for Big Macs, well then that's a good time to turn the lights off and go to sleep. LOL
