Is Bad to Take My 6 Month Old off of Formula

I was wondering if it is bad if I take my son off of formula? He had 2 teeth come in and we just kicked him off the bottle because he kept putting holes in the nipples, so I was wondering if it is bad to stop formula and introduce milk and juice?

What can I do next?

Yes it's bad!!! Babies cannot probably digest cow's milk until they are 1 years old, and juice??!!! No way! It does not have nearly as many vitamins, minerals, and nutrients as formula!! Sorry to be so blunt, but you need to keep him on formula. Try different nipples, or just put up with it - he is probably just testing out his new teeth, and will probably stop biting soon. Either way, do not stop giving him formula!!

Yes, it would be bad. Please discuss your baby's nutrition with your doctor so that you understand. If you are not giving him breastmilk, then he gets formula til a year. Formula is not a beverage like milk and juice, he isn't getting it because he is thirsty. His formula provides his nutrition, which milk and juice and even food do not. Until age one, his primarly nutrition comes from that formula if you aren't breastfeeding. I'm honestly surprised that you don't know this and it concerns me, Please discuss infant nutrition with your doctor. Your baby can take his formula feedings from a cup or switch to a bottle with stronger nipples, like silicone ones.

It's way too early to put an infant on milk and they don't really need juice during the first year of life. Cow's milk will not digest well because a 6 month old baby will not have the enzymes in his gut to break down the whey protein. Therefore, he is likely to develop gas, diarreah or constipation, and even allergies from an early exposure to milk. Please consider a different bottle or sippy cup, but please keep him on formula till age 1. Juice and cows milk will not give him adequate nutrition at this age. Please talk to your pediatrician about some solutions to your concerns. Midwife mom of 3

You can take him off the bottle if you want but not off the formula. Just put his formula in a cup. And don't give him juice yet. He's way to young and it could cause problems.

formula until at least a year old. Your baby is too young! Introduce a sipy bottle that looks like a bottle but has a plastic spout. Continue with the formula.

NO juice, please.. the sugar is not good for him. If you must offer juice, offer sugar free iced tea. Dont get him too used to sweet things too early, as you might have a problematic sweet tooth on your hands to deal with.

You can give water at this age, but not cow's milk.

Good luck.

You must NOT stop giving your son formula. Until 1 year, formula or breastmilk should be the primary source of nutrition. Cow's milk has too much sodium and potassium for his kidneys to handle at this age, is hard on his stomach and can cause anemia. It simply doesn't have the proper balance of nutrients for an infant, so in rare cases stopping formula before 1 year can even cause brain damage.

It's also not necessary to introduce juice at all, ever. I have never given my child juice -- she drinks water and eats fruit, which is much healthier (juice is very high in sugar relative to the vitamins in it and it lacks the dietary fiber of fruit. I'd given juice watered down with at least 50% water if my child refused fruit or needed it for constipation, but otherwise I'm not giving it).

It's possible to give formula through a sippy cup, although generally that's not done until more like 10 months. I don't imagine a 6 month old would be able to take the necessary 24-30ish ounces of formula through a sippy. It's normal for a baby to go through a biting stage as they learn how to suck with their new teeth. I say just buy some more nipples and wait it out. You could also stop the feeding and set him down when he bites the nipple (just like a breastfeeding mother would do when she is bitten) and then resume it a few minutes later to try to teach him not to bite.

Keep him on formula until 12 months. At that point, you switch to whole milk. He is getting major nutrients from formula and juice is horrible. All sugar, no nutritional value. His digestive system is not yet ready for milk. Don't rush it.

DO NOT take your baby of formula! Their systems are not ready to handle cows milk and they really need all the vitamins and minerals in formula. You will get the OK to move to cows milk from your doctor around 12-15 months.
Also juice erodes the enamel on teeth so you'd just be causing yourself a lot more trouble if you do juice now. And I'd hold off on juice as long as possible. It doesn't have a lot of nutritional value.

Get with your pedi on this one. I personally wouldn't. He needs lots of vitamins and regular milk maybe too harsh on his system. Maybe put the formula in a sippy cup?
