We have three airline tickets to use before the end of the year. They are with Jetblue so our flight options are limited - basically back east, Austin Tx, SLC Utah, Seattle, and Portland. We do not want to fly back east since our 2 yo would be so miserable and drive us and everyone else bonkers on that flight. We have never been to Salt Lake City Utah and thought that it might be fun. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. Is there anything to do there in September that would be fun for a family with two small children? Can you recommend a place to stay, eat, etc?? Thanks so much for your help!! :o)
In SLC you can visit the Discovery Gateway children's museum. It's awesome and a ton of fun to watch your kids play. There are things for 2 and 4 year olds. My 1.5 yo had a blast as did my 8 year old brother. Around downtown there are fun bakeries, shops etc and you can tour temple square.
Thanksgiving point will take you 45-1 hr to get there, but it's a lot of fun. Check out the website. It's really fun to rent a golf cart and drive around the gardens. It was worth the $.
I haven't been to the Planetarium myself, but my family has gone and really enjoyed it. They also love to shop at the Gateway mall. It's pretty fun.
I loved our visits to SLC. We drove to Vernal and saw the Dinasaur National Monument. It's about 3 hours away but we really enjoyed it. There are a lot of things to do. You can get a travel guide.
I have never been but Utah is really into scrapbooking. If you enjoy that also part of the Grand Canyon is in Utah.
There is a ton to do in Salt Lake City. Google Gate Way mall. It's an outside mall with tons of shops and places to eat. There is a kid science museum there. (my kids loved it) Also ThanksGiving Point. There is another museum there and I think it's a Dinosaur one. There is also an Imax theater and other fun, family activities. Lagoon is an amusement park right there too. There is also the Hogle Zoo. Salt Lake is pretty big and has everything right there when it comes to hotels and places to eat. I think you would really like it there.
Would you be able to come in the Summer or Fall? That way you could take a short drive up into the gorgeous mountains....visit Park City, all of the Olympic venues, Sundance and the Mount Timpanogos caves. I really recommend taking advantage of the outdoors that Utah has to offer. There are a million day hikes to go on, if you're into that. Park City outlets are always fun to shop at, and the old Park City Main Street has some awesome restaurants and shops.
Downtown we have Temple Square, which is gorgeous and definitely worth your time. And your children will LOVE the Discovery Gateway children's museum. We have a pass and go weekly, and my kids still get excited about it! If you come in the summer, there is Heritage park, across from Hogle Zoo. There are train rides, horse rides, petting zoo, weekly shows.
Good luck with your decision! If you do make the trip to Utah, I hope you enjoy your stay!!
Salt Lake is pretty neat. I lived there around the time of the Olympics.
I agree, Thanksgiving Pointe is nice, I believe there is a restaurant there, a scenic point and a hug dinosaur museum.
Temple Square downtown is a very neat place to visit, religious, but even for those who not part of the religion it is beautiful and interesting.
Park City is the famous ski resort. Lots of great shopping, restaurant there and if you go during the summer, you can go down the Alpine slide and even up the ski lift.
Utah is a very family oriented place so SLC and the neighboring cities are going to have a lot of activities. There is a zoo, plantearium, mueseum of natural science/history, theme parks, water park, ... here is another travel to slc guide with a kids activity guide:

Here's a good website with more details on activities:

I'm from a city an hour away from salt lake and it's great!! There is a lot of construction going on now in downtown, so it isn't as fun as usual. BUT I love Hogle Zoo, the Aviary, Thanksgiving Point Gardens and children's gardens are a lot of fun same with the Farm Country!! Taking the Heber Creeper is TONS of fun for kids. Salt Air is smelly, but is fun to wade at.
The Other place is a great American/Greek restraunt. Thanksgiving point has a really nice restraunt or there is a kid friendly grill. The Pie has some of the best pizza you can ever have. Period. I'm born and raised here so if you have any more questions you can ask me!
Yeah thanksgiving point has the largest dinosaur museum in the country. . I think. That's what people keep telling me. Also There is a dino museum in Ogden which is about 45 minutes north of SLC.
I haven't been to the Gateway mall in a bit, but there is an aquarium and a planetarium. Take the kids swimsuits or water clothes because there is a water shooty thing from the ground.
Lagoon is fun for older kids, but there are some kid rides. Mostly huge rollercoasters.

I used to live around there. Keep in mind that some of the places people are suggesting are not in Salt Lake, but like 45 minutes to an hour away - Thanksgiving Point, Lagoon, Park City are a little bit of a drive, but fun. The dinosaur park in Ogden is not worth the drive. Thanksgiving Point, if you were to drive somewhere, probably has the most to do for a little kid - pony rides, petting zoo, animals, hay rides, dinosaur museum. Temple Square right in downtown Salt Lake has lots of beautiful flowers and visitor's centers/museum type of things about the Mormon pioneers. The temple is gorgeous. The Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake is a bird refuge but very fun for kids. There is a merry go round and bird shows where the kids can see birds out of the cages, etc. If it is still hot when you go, and it could very well still be in the 80s and 90s in the day there, there are waterparks and the 49th street galleria (name might be changed) in South Salt Lake has indoor games and stuff.
At Park City, I think there is the alpine slide. It is for warmer times of the year. They are like these little scooter things that go down a cement mountain, I think. The mountains with little drives up the canyon are super close and beautiful.
