Is Anyone Else Sick or Notice Something Going Around These past 2 or 3 Weeks?

I randomly came down with something yesterday and today. My doctor thinks it could be mainly allergy related. I woke up this morning feeling horrible. My throat was sore and swollen. My head feels like its going to explode and I'm stopped up with a runny nose. No coughing or mucus though. I just came down with a slight on and off fever and the achy-ness. My skin hurts and I'm freezing cold. My doc looked at my throat and checked my urine and sinus'. She thinks its just the allergies and I have an appointment next Thursday with an allergist. BUT, as of this Thursday I am not supposed to take any type of allergy medication so they can test my allergies. I'm wondering if it is JUST allergies or if its something more. I feel like poo and if its going around and is contagious I'm going to be keeping my distance from my 16 month old for a few days. Anyone noticing a bug?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I went back to the doctor and had a strep check and I don't have strep. I do have a sinus infection though and once again she said its mainly just allergies! I'm feeling a tiny bit better and I'm gonna start my antibiotics today.

If its not allergies, it might be strep ~ It's going around all the schools. Even if you don't have the sore throat, I would get checked out...thats how it starts:( Feel better! A.

www.pollen.com This is a great website for info on what pollen is present in the air on any given day. If you have been allergy tested, you can see when your allergens are highest. If you haven't been tested you can track your bad days and this may help you narrow down your most likely allergens. They will also e-mail alerts to you. And yes, strep is going around the McKinney schools too. :(

Yep - I agree - strep. And it is a very nasty strain. My 3 year old son and my husband got it last week - and my son was ON antibiotics at the time, which apparently means there should be no way he could get it, not to mention it's supposed to be rare for kids under 5. But he did have it - golf ball size tonsils, too! Have your husband look at your throat w/ a flashlight - bright red throat, or swollen tonsils, or white pus on throat or tonsils are big indicators. Your doc can do a rapid strep test & tell you in about 5 minutes. Good luck! S.

R.,
I noticed your post in the "So What Happened?" sidebar. You posted last year at the beginning of October. It's getting close to that time so when I read it I decided to share with you what I do to avoid the biannual sinus infections I used to get due to my allergies.

When my heavy allergy seasons hit (fall and spring) I start rinsing my nose with the NeilMed sinus rinse bottle and the packets they sell. You can get them at Walgreens. I've heard some people say that the Neti pot is even easier to use, but I've never used one. I don't know where to get them, but I imagine you could get one at Whole Foods or someplace like that.

Since I'm allergic to other things besides seasonal items, I have to do a year-round medication routine also. I daily spray my nose with Astelin and Flonase and I take a generic of Zyrtec. If I skip any of these medications, I tend to get headaches and have trouble breathing. Again, during my peak seasonal allergy times, I have to do the meds PLUS do the sinus rinsing to avoid getting headaches and sinus infections.

It doesn't sound like you have it as bad so maybe you can just do the nasal rinsing for the seasonal allergies. The stuff is fairly inexpensive and easy to use, so I feel it's worth it.

Good luck,
A.

PS What you want to do is try to avoid the sinus infections so you don't have to take the antibiotics. They can mess up your system! Getting sinus infections twice a year for several years and treating them with antibiotics upset the balance of "good" vs "bad" flora inside my body and I developed a chronic yeast infection that would flare up every time I had a period! Talk about obnoxious!
