My girl is almost 8 months. I'm giving her cereal and veggie and fruit puree. I wonder whether I can give her a piece of bread to eat all by herself. Is she too young for that?

What can I do next?

The general rule I used with my kids was if I had to ask or wonder about it... then it probably is too young to feed it to her, I would stick with buttery crackers like Ritz or the baby kid that melt in the mouth this way there is no worry of choking. One simply cannot take the chance of a piece of anything becoming logged in the throat (not worth it) so skip it because she really is too young. Many years are ahead when she can eat bread......do not feed bread now wait until she is a toddler.

I started giving my daughter tiny bread pieces to eat at that age. They were the size of about 1/4 pinky nail and she ate 1 at a time. Don't give her the whole piece of bread, she might get too much in her mouth and choke.

She is too young. Even if you cut it into tiny pieces it's a choking hazzard.

Our daughter suddenly refused all pureed food except for yogurt a little after 8 months (around 8 1/2), so we had to transition her sooner than expected to finger food only.
I didn't give her bread, but toasted bagel slices cut into pinky nail size bites.
She also had well cooked veggies (carrots, crushed peas, beans) pasta, tofu...
Today, she is 10 months old and (except for the food that are not recommended before 1 year old), she eats what we eat everyday, just cut in small pieces.
Note: we eat lots of veggies, and no salt.

In my opinion "yes". Bread is a major choking hazzard.
Check and see what your MD recommends, the office will be happy to help you.

I gave VERY toasted (dry) bread. Mostly because it is great when they are teething. Don't give soft bread and make sure she does not get a bunch of mushy bread in her mouth.
At that age pretty much anything is a choking hazard, but if you supervise her she will probably be fine.

Yes she is definitely too young. There are many different toddlers snacks
on the market that youcould try giving her tha she could eat by herself.

If you want to introduce bread products then toast them for now. Something like bagel , English muffin or even regular bread toasted.

You didn't mention whether she has teet and how many, but I believe that yes, she is too young to be given a slice of bread. If she is only eating pureed foods, normally the first finger foods are tiny pieces of cooked, soft food (veggies, fruits). If you give her a teensy pieces, like the size of a pea, that's one thing (but if it's just plain white bread, it offers her nothing of nutritional value and just fills her up when breastmilk or formula should still be her primary nutritional, with supplemental foods). If you mean letting her try a slice of bread, she has no way of biting off appropriate sized pieces, and it sounds like she's never had table food, so this could be a choking disaster.

Hi S., I have a daughter the same age, and a great baby and toddler cookbook. Your question made me check the book once again.. it's written there: Between 6 and 9 m.bread and cereals, including wholemeal bread, rusks, wholegrain low-sugar breakfast cereals(mini wheat biscuits, porridge and hot oat cereal)can now be given.Avoid large amounts of high-fibre foods, such as high-fibre bread or bran flakes - these are too difficult for young babies to digest. A finger of oven-baked wholemeal toast makes a good teething rusk.
I do introduce bread to my child already, sometimes very little pieces and she is taking them and trying to eat herself..why not..it's fun for her too..sometimes big piece and she is sucking it and massaging her gums.. As long as she doesn't bite too big piece for her is fine, of course i am watching her. I believe you don't leave your child to eat all alone at this age :)
Good luck!

Oh thanks for bringing back such fun memories. When my kids were 8 months old they loved chomping on the crust of the pizza. I did not give them the sauce or cheese just pizza crust. they enjoyed it so much and it made meal time longer and more enjoyable for my husband and I. They sat longer in their chair and was not as needy so it was a win win situation for all.
Good luck and enjoy the moment.

Whatever you give her you need to make sure it is not a choking hazard. You cannot give her a whole slice of bread, but tiny bits would be ok. Someone mentioned letting their baby munch on pizza crust. I would be leery of letting them do that in case they chomped off too big a piece and choked. Likewise grapes and hot dogs are very dangerous unless cut into tiny pea size pieces.

I wouldn't give her bread. Why do you think it will be a good idea? I remember when my sons were at the age when they were beginning to eat different foods, I would be excited about introducing new foods. Now I know that I was not wise in doing this with some of the foods. There are crackers that would be better for her (grain) and she can hold them better. Bread is soft and can cleave to the roof of her mouth. There is no hurry to introduce her to bread so I wouldn't right now. I am sure if your pediatrician read this question the answer would be "no" and as a mother of four adult sons and 4 grandchildren, and a previous childcare provider for many years, I don't think I have ever heard of someone wanting to give bread this early. That's funny. (smile) I would wait. There is no (little) nutritional value in white bread. Have fun.
