Irregular Periods One Year Post Baby

So just to give a little background of my last year...I had my baby in May 2008, IUD inserted August, breastfed through September, first "period" October, spotted for three months with IUD so removed in January, periods every 25-28 days but very spotty, then finally a normal, heavy period in April...but none since. Took PG tests and all are negative. Is this normal to be so irregular after having a baby...I was on BC for years leading up to pregnancy so I really don't know what my normal cycle is...could it be this irregular? I am growing more concerned since we want to try for baby number 2...I know I should probably call the doctor, but just nervous and wanted to check in with what any of you thought...thanks for listening as always!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just wanted to give a little update...turns out I was pregnant the whole time! Right now I am 16 weeks along so when I had the first negative pregnancy test, I was really 6 weeks pregnant! Thanks so much for the support and advice...am sure I will need much more when Baby 2 arrives!

OK, this is totally along a different line, but might help anyway...I do not have a regular cycle at all (maybe three times a year if not on birth control), but we were still able to conceive twice. So don't let that part stress you out...

It's always good to err on the side of caution and call the doctor. Everyone's bodies are different. I had a baby 6 months ago, bled for the first 5 (on triple doses of birth control), and now haven't had a period in a month and a half....so you never know.

Did you have the IUD when you were on B.C. in the past? The IUD can do that to your cycles. I had it and it really messed me up; it took awhile for me to get regular again.

OR are you old enough to be pre-menopausal? That would be my only other thought, but I'm guessing it's due to the IUD.

Were you regular before your years of BC? Those little pills (and probably the IUD) will make you regular, but then as you go off them, you move into "your natural cycle".
It does sound perfectly plausible, but if you are looking to have another, I'd see the doctor. There's nothing medically wrong with having a cycle of longer than 28 days, it just makes getting pregnant that much harder.

K.,

When we alter our hormones...for what ever reason, sometimes it takes effort and time to bring them back into balance.

Is healthy hormones thru nutritional support something you'd like to investigate?

Congratulations on being a stay at home mom...what a blessing!

Well, I don't have any specific "insight, " but, I can tell you that I had my son in April, 2008, and have experienced a similar issue. It took about 3 months before I had my first period post-baby. I was not able to breast feed...tried, but, my milk never really came in. I figured out, a couple months later, that I had thyroid issues after delivery, which, I was told, is very common. My thyroid has since leveled out (no meds now). Anyhow, I have not missed any periods since I started having them again post delivery, but, they have not been what I would consider "regular." I was having one about every 31 or 32 days for a while, which was not normal for me. Then, I had a couple that were really early, like 21 days. Then, last month, it was 28 days and I seem to be on the track for that again this month. I am also thinking about trying for another baby and have been concerned. I was on BC pills for a long time prior to conceiving and don't know what my "normal" cycle would be either, I guess! Anyhow, I went to my OBGYN this month for my first annual check up and asked my doctor about this whole scenario. He seemed non-concerned. He mentioned that, in my case, it could be taking a little longer to get "regular" due to the thyroid issues I had but that it's not uncommon for regular periods to take a while post delivery. I actually had an ultrasound and was told that everything looked totally on track - lining thickened, etc. So, basically, I guess I just have to see what happens. I am thinking that I will wait a couple more cycles and see how they go. It seems like it's been long enough though, you know? So, anyhow, that's what I have experienced. I am nervous about trying to become pregnant if I am not regular though because I did have 3 miscarriages before having my son and, well, I don't really want to go through that again, but, at the time, my periods were "regular, " so, who knows.

On another note, how is your 13 month old eating? My son is slow going with table foods...we're still supplementing with a lot of jarred baby-type food. My ped says that's normal...I was just wondering what you're experiencing. I know all babies are different, just curious.

Good luck with everything!

It's hard to say I would call your dr. I do know with experience from an iud I donot recommend them. I had some issues with one. I blew up like a water balloon and felt my skin was being pulled to copacity and I also felt fat when it was in. I had lighter periods. It did take about three months for me to have a normal none spotty period after it was removed. But after 3 months I normaled out. So I would see what the dr says.

I would call the ob and make an appointment. I had issues with an irregular period that started right after I was done breastfeeding and they checked all my horomone levels to make sure they were all normal and they were so they put me on bc for 3 months (not what you really feel like doing when you are trying fot #2) but I did it and it resulated them out right away.

It takes some time for your body to adjust.

The typical woman has a cycle every 28-35 days. Two of my sisters have one naturally about every other month...

It takes a few months for your body to get used to the lower natural doses of hormones in your system. It has only been a bit over a month right? I would wait until 2 months have gone by before calling the dr... All they could do is do a blood test and start you on the pill again to force it.

They are finding that it is not harmful for a woman to only have a few periods a year... So I doubt it is doing any harm...

If it still worrys you, call the dr and see what they say...
You had a baby a year ago... Your hormones mixed with all of this and probibly sleep deprevation a bit could be playing a joke on you...
