Irregular Bleeding

I have been bleeding on and off for about two weeks now. I started to bleed a week and a half before my period is due. I thought my period just came early but then when the time came, my period did too. So I had been bleeding off and on for two weeks. I also had a yeast infection in the middle of it, so I was on Monistat for 7 days. I am taking ortho tri cyclen lo. I had my second c-section last July. Also sometimes when my husband and I are together I have some soreness in my abdomen. Not sure what is going on. I'm going to go to an OBGYN next week, just wondering if anyone has any ideas. I'm kind of freaking out. I'll let you know what the Dr. says too. Thanks!
Update: Today is Sunday, I am having a lot of soreness in lower abdomin all the way across, the bleeding has stopped but I feel like I'm bruised. Ibuprofen seems to help. I'm going in tomorrow. Thanks for the comments so far.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses and input. I went to my OB today and he did an ultrasound and found an ovarian cyst on my left ovary. He said that it wasn't very big and that it will probably go away on it's own. I feel much better knowing it's nothing serious.

Hi,
Did you already go to the Dr.? I am wondering what they said? It can be just still soreness from your c-section... sometimes that happens. Are you nursing? There are lots of causes for this to happen and without more information it can be hard to say exactly what is going on. Was the bleeding heavy the whole time or light spotting? Was there any clots? How were your cylcles before your c-section? Are they normally short? Do you normally spot during ovulation? There are so many factors that can be involved. I woud get a western dignosis and if you want alternative help I would consult with an acupuncturist. I am an acupuncturist and have a lot of success working with prolonged and early periods. If you have any questions or would like to talk more about the chinese medical perspective, please call.

Hi L.,
I am a Medical Herbalist and I specialize in Women's reproductive health. I also practice a form of massage that focuses on abdominal and pelvic health, and the alignment of the Uterus in the pelvic bowl. What you are experiencing is an imbalance in your hormone levels and the possibility that your uterus may be out of alignment...causing the pain and irregular bleeding. Before your doctor puts you on more pharmaceuticals you may want to try this option. I work safely with women who are on birth control and encourage them to utilize complementary therapies to support rather than suppress your bodies natural rhythms. Give a call. ###-###-####. My business is Holistic Pathways and is listed in the "business" section of Mama Source...check it out. I would love to help your body get back into balance naturally and safely. L. Golub

I had a similar problem, and it ended up being endometriosis. I had surgery for it and the problem is completely gone. Glad you are going into OBGYN though! GOOD LUCK!

It could be an ovarian cyst which causes tenderness during intercourse. Your ob/gyn will know.

Hi L.
I can understand that you would be freaking out since this is something new and a little frightening. My advice to you is to do your best to stay calm and wait and see what the doc says. You have done the right thing by making an appointment with a professional and getting this checked out quickly. There could be many reasons why this is happening and the not knowing is the scary part. Our bodies are amazing, though. Let your mind rest in knowing that you are taking care of this and seeing a professional soon. Enjoy your days and do not predict any gloom on yourself. You will know very soon. I do want to know what your doc says. That is what this site is for - support. This may not be what you wanted but I thought it might be nice for you to hear that I understand. I believe that worrying just steals today's moments. I'll be waiting to hear what you find out.

You need to get to your obgyn asap. I'm glad that you have an appt next week. It is most likely a cyst or endometriosis. While an ultrasound will show a cyst, it will probably not show the endometriosis. Request a vaginal ultrasound too because that shows more. Your dr will want to know when and how often you have pain so start keeping track. If it is bad enough, you could have surgery to remove the endo. Endo is tricky because you may not have a lot of it, but it could be on your ligaments, etc so it is more painful. I've had a few surgeries for it (I have endo and cysts), so if you have any questions just let me know. Good luck!

As far as the the bleeding goes, I don't know what to say except make sure you do see your doctor. There are way too many things that could cause what you're going through. I can suggest that when you see your doctor, have him check the position of your uterus. With my 1st c-section, my uterus was basically "upside down" and that was why there was pain when my hubs and I were together. Can't really fix it per say, you just have to try different positions and "work" around it. For me, it did get better and now I very rarely feel pain. Oddly enough, it was the worst right before & right after my period. Best of luck to you.

Hi L. -
I think you are absolutely doing the right thing in checking in with your doc and I agree with everything the other two women mentioned/suggested. I also want to add two things... First, I don't have experience with birth control pills postpartum and this might be the main contributor to the bleeding, but I do know that sometimes our bodies begin to bleed (even at 6 months postpartum) as a signal that we're too stressed, overdoing it, and not taking enough care of ourselves. I have 3 kids and always took note when I would have unusual bleeding to check in with myself and see what I needed for myself. There's so little time and space for YOU right now!! Also, if your doc does determine that there is some hormonal imbalance that is not related to the BC pills, acupuncture can be extremely effective for balancing hormones in women and it doesn't involve additional hormone drugs. Acupuncture has been tremendously effective in helping me in the past. Hand in there and good luck :-) -- L.

Did you miss a pill? Sometimes if you miss a pill, it can cause you to bleed lightly a little early and then have your full blown period right on time. The same thing has happened to me but it was because I missed just one pill when my daughter was right about 6 months old too. It could be a lot of the things other posters are saying, but it could be as simple as you are taking the wrong kind of birth control pill. That said, I was on the exact same pill that I'm on now 5 years ago before I had my first child and had absolutely no bleeding problems when I missed a pill. 5 years and 4 kids later, the exact same pill is having a different effect. Definitely check with your doctor though, but don't worry too much about it until you hear what he has to say. Your mind usually makes up something a lot worse than what it actually is. Good luck.

Hi L.,

I recommend a book called Hormone Balance, Your Life & Health by Kristine Klitzke, R.N., B.S.N. It has some AMAZING information! I started taking the transdermal, bioidentical, natural progestrone cream and saw phenomenal results in a very short time...I woun't go without it anymore! I have done a lot of research on this and found out that unfortunately there are very few doctors that go outside the formularies or what the case studies from the pharmas relate to them. A wonderful doctor out in Aurora is Raphael D'Angelo. If you can get an appointment with him, I would highly recommend it! He saved my 2nd pregnancy and I was able to deliver VBAC.

Hi L.,
I am glad you posted your concerns. I don't have any suggestions, I was actually hoping you will let me know what your Dr. says because I am having the same symptoms. I have been having them for a while now, but my Dr. said it was because of my IUD and it will wear off after a little while. I just don't know if it still should be giving me problems. It is such a problem for me to get to the dr.s because of my schedule and my kids, so I don't want to go if its nothing. Good luck and I hope to hear from you! Thanks!

WOW!!! The responses to your situation is amazing! So many ladies out there know so much about this kind of thing.
My situation was sort of the same. I started having really irregular periods just after my last baby...a lot heavier and every cycle they would get closer and closer. I ended up going to three different doctors in less than 6 months to find out what was going on. Turns out that my family is prone to fibroids, which I had several, and I also had adenomosis. I ended up getting a hysterectomy at 27 (my youngest was not even two), which was the best thing that happened to me. Although, I would not recommend anyone go through that...it was very hard for about 2 years.
Are you prone to cysts? Have you ever had them before?
Please keep posting...I am curios to see how this works out for you.
I hope this settles down for you soon. Good luck and take care
S.

Hi L., sorry you are going through this... I don't have any kind of advise I think as Kim said, you are doing the right things in seeing the Dr. I just wanted to add and you probably already know this but if you start to have any kind of major pain or the bleeding gets really heavy- please go to the emergency room. Don't wait for your appointment. Are you prone to cysts? Are you just starting the Ortho tri cyclen because sometimes our bodies do weird things as they adjust to the hormones.

Good luck and we would like to hear what happens.

Hi L. -

You may ask your doc about the posibility that you have endometriosis. Or there may be something going on with your progesterone making you bleed a little before your period....I went thru a little of that before getting pregnant with my second baby.
