Hey again! =) Another question I plan to ask my doctor but until then was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on. Since you all were EXTREMELY helpful with my green stools while breastfeeding question!! =) I am curious if anyone knows a recommended amount of Iron a nursing mother should be taking each day . I have looked on websites and mainly I just see the symptoms for an Iron overdose. How much is enough..or too much?? My prenatals have 27mg (I take them once /day) and the "greens" supplement has 3mg and I take just one a day so far. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Unless your doctor has told you to up your iron intake I wouldn't take an additional supplement. It really does affect your digestive system and can be a real drag. After my first was born by a very complicated c-section I was against a blood transfusion and so became incredibly anemic. I was put on 900mg of iron a day. No, that's not a typo, 900. It was horrible beyond words. I was so afraid I was poisoning my nursling but my doc kept telling me it was fine to take that much. I took myself off that much iron after a couple of weeks b/c I couldn't take it anymore. I eventually recovered and after my second c-section I welcomed the blood transfusion and had such a better recovery! Anyway, it would seem that your prenatals would have enough. If you're curious you can ask for bloodwork to be done at your check up to see if your iron levels are okay. Enjoy your little one!

Hi M.,

I just found this website and thought it might be helpful to totally answer your question (http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/Iron.htm )

There is a table on there that tells you how many mg of iron a baby needs. It also says that if you breastfeed that the baby takes about 49% of your iron intake. So for example, a 7-12 month old infant needs 11 grams of iron a day so as long as you take in at least 22 grams of iron a day that is enough for your baby to thrive.

I hope this helps.

According to my doc breastfeeding women don't need extra iron, even switching to Women's One a day is fine instead of prenatals since they have extra.
