Hi.

I was thinking of getting an Ipad for my kids mostly, so they can take advantage of the large screen and the educational apps. I have an IPhone and I am very happy with it. We are thinking of getting the version that is not just Wi-fi, although we plan to use it a home mostly and we have wireless at home. However, we would like the option to be able to connect to the cellular network, because it seems that AT&T will let you buy pre-paid data plan sessions. I am buying the Ipad with credit card reward miles, but I am not sure if I should go with the Ipad 2 or Ipad 3? We have never had an Ipad. Do you moms and dads have a recommendation as to which version we should buy, Ipad 2 or Ipad 3?

thanks...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks Moms. Even though everyone recommended the 2, i am so tempted to get the 3 not because of the screen but because of the camera and it looks like its $100 more. I am getting enough $100 walmart gift cards to cover the cost of the IPad. Thanks.

I have the iPad 2, and I love it. From what I understand, the only difference between the iPad 2 and iPad 3 is the high definition screen and better camera. But if it will be for your kids, I would go for the iPad 2. You never know if they might accidentally break it. I know you will be buying it with your credit card miles, but I saw that the iPad 2 (16 GB w/no 3G) is on sale at Walmart for only $399.

I heard that one of the drawbacks from the iPad 3 is that there is a hotspot where the battery is. If you hold it or have it on your lap for an extended period of time, it gets uncomfortably hot. It's not a burn hazard, but mildy annoying.

Good luck! I never expected it, but my children are learning a lot of Mandarin Chinese through the free apps, and have fun doing it.

I wouldn't spend the extra for the 3 if it's going to be for the kids. Heck, I'd probably even find a 1 at a deep discount!

I am the 2 and love it!

I also don't think it's worth the extra purchase price or data fees to have it connected to a cellular network. Unless you're really going to be somewhere a lot that you're going to need it. You can download the movies on wifi and watch them without wifi. Most games can be downloaded on wifi and played without wifi. Only the social gaming would be a problem, but are your kids really doing that? And most apps working without wifi once downloaded and installed. I would say that 95% of the time, I use mine within a wifi network (home, church, work, Starbucks, etc). I find that if I'm out and about and need access, I can pop in to a retailer, like Starbucks, and use their wifi for free.

I'd get the iPad 2. We had the iPad 1, hubby got the iPad 3 and gave me the 1, which I sold on ebay and got the iPad 2. As mentioned above, the main thing better about the iPad 3 is the camera and the screen. The camera is much better in the 3, but I can't tell a big difference in the screen. We have a 3 year old who uses it for educational apps and movies.

Go with iPad 2 refurbished. It will be cheaper, and the only difference between 2 and 3 are exactly as lucy said it. The basic idea I have heard is that if you have an iPad2 and will me moving up to iPad 3 - you'll notice the difference. If you've never had one before - iPad 2 will be just as great.
