...for the 1st year of life, breastmilk/Formula is still a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition... not solids and not other liquids. This is also per our Pediatrician as well.

You may want to give him table foods... but ultimately, you need to go by your baby's cues and readiness.

And, you NEED to watch out for choking.

My son is 8 months old and here is what he eats... softly cooked: peas, sliced carrots, green beans, steamed sweet potato, broccoli with the stem (its like a handle) torn up whole wheat tortillas, mini pita bread, whole wheat toast with pureed veggies spread on it ( like sweet potato), bananas, avocados, wedges of pear, noodles not spaghetti because it can make them gag (I toss noodles in veggie puree), large curd cottage cheese, soft meat like poached chicken or sausage not hot dogs, cooked beans of any kind. Cheerios for snacks. Cheese cubes, string cheese. That is about it I think.
Remember gagging is different from choking and sometimes babies gag a few times when they first try a new food. Unless they are really choking dont worry ( I know its hard to watch). Keep up with the cereal for a while because it has iron in it which they don't get much of form other places.

Here is a website with some delicious recipes for baby, toddler and family food. I have used more than a few of them, but you may find, as I did, that you have to adjust some of them to what you can find and what your child/family likes!

Cooked soft veggies, rice, pasta, noodles, mashed fruits, crackers, toast and jelly, waffles, french toast, small tender meat bits -- basically anything you have that can be cut/mashed enough for him to handle it. I was always a little hyper on the choking issue so tended to err on the side of caution, but I used to see parents letting their under a year kids gnaw on a whole bagel! <<shudder>>

My kids really wanted to self feed at this age. Anything that they could pick up with their fingers was a hit. We did cut up grapes, pieces of whole wheat bagel, graham crackers (because they get really mushy), cheese cubes, large curd cottage cheese, avacado cubes, pasta, ...

You can even cut up some foods that are choking hazzards (like apples) and put them in this mess self-feeder. Baby holds the handle and only the juices can come out. Loved it!

Anything that they could pick up that wouldn't be a choking hazzard.
