Did, or does anyone have this condition. Also known as "itchy moms", it's very
serious, malfunction of the liver and getting rid of bile. My dr. is telling me that
they might need to take the baby early. I am only 32 weeks. Looking for support, or
advice. The internet is too much scary info. and overwhelming me. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Go Outside!!! Natural sunlight helps the liver work properly. Not sure about the condition, but both my babies had really bad jaundice, one was in the NICU with it, and I'm telling you sunlight is the best cure. Jaundice occurs when the liver cannot break down the excess bilirubin in the system. Sunlight stimulates the liver.

Hi P.,

I also suffered from and was diagnosised after a 4 day hopital stay with the same condition. I was 34 weeks at that time - and was told the same thing. I am a 21 yr old first time mom - and was also very scared. I was watched as a high risk pregnancy; had stress tests twice a week; along with a presciption of Ursodiol which helped with the itching somewhat. I was told if I made it to 38 weeks - they would induce labor; and I did. I have a beautiful, healthy baby girl. I later had some other complications, that mirrored my symptoms - feel free to email me if you want to chat more; Angela / ____@____.com - Good Luck :)

I've never heard about it but I did a quick search on a health forum that I frequent and someone listed the following website... www.itchymoms.com

Since the site is exclusively for this particular condition, I hope it isn't too overwhelming.

Here is an excerpt from the home page:

"Aside from taking UDCA to decrease your bile acids and helping to keep your baby safe, some women have found the following things helpful in alleviating the symptoms. Please note that these should not be a replacement for the medicated treatment of Ursodeoxycholic Acid that help to reduce the bile acids in your blood and that of your baby in utero.

- Eat a Low-Fat Diet
- Drink Lots of Water
- Try Benefibre (take separate from UDCA) *
- Try Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root
- Try Sarna Lotion to Cool the Itch **
- Keep Temperature Low/Wear Cool Clothing"

I am skeptical about taking any medication, however, especially when your liver is malfunctioning, so I am not recommending it necessarily (not familiar with this one especially). Good luck!

Cholestasis of pregnancy is most likely what you have based on your symptoms and from reading your post. The concern about cholestasis of pregnancy is not the symptoms of itching but of the fact that there is a slight increased chance that the baby can die inside the uterus. This increase generally seen in the later stages like 39 weeks of pregnancy and above. Most people with cholestasis of pregnancy can take a medication called ursidiol which helps. Most patients have their baby monitored once or twice per week after 34 weeks and get delievered slightly early at 37 to 38 weeks. Hope this helps.
