hey M.. i was wondering who a good company was to go through to get health insurance for my husband and i. his work offers it but it is insanely expensive so we want to get our insurance else where. what companies have good coverage but are AS LOW IN COST AS POSSIBLE lol. keeping in mind we are planning on getting pregnant this year and we are hoping we can find a midwife to take our insurance when the time comes.

What can I do next?

I don't have any suggestions as far as a company goes. I do know however - a year or so ago I looked into a private policy versus what my company offers. I thought my companies rates were way too high. What I found out is that my company was cheaper than any policy I could get on my own. The only idea I have is for you to talk to an insurance broker who can look at lots of different companies and get some rates for you. I would just be surprised if you can find something cheaper than the group rate you get with your hubby's company. Good luck !

Most private insurance does not cover maternity at a reasonable rate. It is cheaper to pay out of pocket.

You are probably going to find your employer insurance is reasonable.

I'm an insurance agent in AZ. Find an independent health ins agent in your area. They are contracted with many health companies and can quote you and get you the best rates. Ask about the maternity to make sure its covered with the policy you decide on. Good luck.

Google private health insurance. You will get a TON of calls.

Not many private insurances will cover pregnancy CHEAPLY. So you might need to weigh that in your options.

Employer coverage is always better and yes midwifery care alone will be cheapest. But if you end up with a hospital birth it won't be! Have you checked into if you qualify for your state aid plan? Sometime you do then you're covered in full! Otherwise I recommend the blue cross and/or blue shield plans. In Washington at least they're two of only three individual plans we can get and they have decent rates and coverages.

When hubby worked we had choices on our coverage. The first few years we were married we had the best they offered. Then as time went on we choose less benefits. I think talking to the insurance person where your hubby works about more selective coverage might be an option. I figure you probably have already done this though.

I am paying for my midwife out of pocket. We have good insurance, but there aren't many midwives that take our insurance.

I work for a testing laboratory and was talking with one of my midwives the other day and her patients are all cash out of pocket, no insurance. She indicated this was the norm in her "circle".
