Hi moms,
OK so my husband has been laid off for more than a year now and I had to take a 20% pay cut. The Cobra health insurance he was offered was to expensive and the insurance my work offers is VERY expensive (ALMOST NO ONE TAKES IT)!!! my husband and I have been without insurance for over a year now, which is not a big deal. My daughter was on MIChild from May 2009 untill May 2010, when she will be cut off as we were denied eligablity this year. The only thing that changed was that I was given a dollar more an hour. Otherwise our financial information has not changed. My question is other than buying my daughter her own health insurance policy through BCBS are there any other options out there. If we don't qualify for MIChild we won't qualify for Medicad. My husband is very much so looking for a job. My work said that in order for me to put my daughter on the companies health insurance, I have to add myself, but it is so expensive that my whole pay check will go to just insurance and we have other bills. I know how important it is for my daughter to have insurance so I thought I would check to see if anyone knows of affordable policies for just kids. I appreciate any help or input. FYI we have cut out all unnessecary expenses in our life, but this added expense will really put a dent in out budget.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks for the advise. we are going to look into bcbs for my daughter and aetna. I really don't feel comfortable having her go without any insurance at all. She is still very young and you never know when an emergency may happen. It's a shame that in this country a basic need like health insurance is such an issue for some many people. here's hoping that hubby finds something soon!

Anymore, health insurance isn't all it's cracked up to be. You can spend alot of money per month and get very little back unless you really have some health problems. Can you hold off until your finances get better? Hopefully you are not cutting back so much that you are not eating properly. What you eat has everything to do with your health. If you could get some sort of catastrophic policy that would cover only something really terrible, those are way more affordable. What gets so expensive is coverage for EVERYTHING...office calls, shots (which I believe you can get at the health department for cheap or free) so many people want to be covered for every little sniffle. Eat right, sleep well, be clean, no sugar...your visits to the doctor will be far less!

Many insurance companies offer individual policies (which are policies that you get outside of an employer group) - especially with so many people out of work these days. I just looked on mibcn.com which is Blue Care Network's website and you can get an individual policy for a child from ages 2-14 for $105 per month. I don't know if that fits into your budget or not. There are copays and deductibles but you would have to sort through the specifics on that.

Check Aetna. My ex insurers our daughter through them and he says they are reasonable and offer many options. I know there is a website that you can get quotes on from different insurance companies, but sorry, I don't know the name of it. You may be able to google it or maybe someone on this forum can help with that.
