I used to work for an OBGYN before I had my baby. She would always due an anal exam without warning. If she would tell you it makes you tense up and harder to preform the test.
Has anyone ever heard of a OB GYN performing an anal exam (without any forewarning) as part of a routine first-time exam of their patients?
Well, as you may have guessed, it did happen to me which is why I was curious to know whether it was the norm or not. I was shocked to say the least, having never expected such an unannounced search of forbidden inner regions. I asked the midwife who delivered my son about it, who said she also had never heard of such a thing. As embarassing as it is, the worst part about it was he reopened a fissure I had developed after giving birth (I didn't keep myself hydrated enough) that had taken me 6 months to heal, leaving me to suffer through another 3 months of discomfort. Needless to say, I didn't continue my care through his office...Thank you all for your responses!

No, I have never heard of that. I have never had one done during the yearly exam, nor has it ever been brought up. You may want to ask the dr. if that is normal routine for him/her or talk to your regular doctor if you have one.
VERY ironic! I went to a new OB GYN about a month ago and she did the SAME thing! I said something to her and she said that if an OB GYN had never done that before, that I never had a proper pelvic exam. So I took her word. I really liked her, but it did scare me. Wonder if it was the same person??? In Oakwood?
It does not surprise me. I have seen doctors break patients water with out asking them or telling them. Some ob/gyn consider it routine. But if he would do this without saying I would beware what he would do when you are pregnant.

Never heard of something like that.
I work for an OB/GYN and they do not do rectal exams without warning. However, I was a patient at planned parenthood at one time and they DID. IT was not comfortable..I felt violated. I would rather know before anything happens. Next time I would decline the rectal exam,or at least tell them you request a warning.
Hi R.,
I am new here, nice to meet ya lol.. but yes i have heard of that, but most dr.s will forwarn you but some have lousy bed side manners.. Sorry for your experience.

No, that sounds pretty odd to me. That seems like something your regular doctor would do if you had issues in that area. I think I'd call your ob/gyn and ask to talk to a nurse about it to see what the reasoning might be.
