my daughter had surgery at 20 monthes. what helped me was that children rarely ever have a problem with anesthesia--it is usually adults who may have an issue. My aunt, who is a nurse told me this.
Hi Mamas
My 9 month old son is going to be scheduled for surgery to repair an inguinial hernia at Stanford children's Hospital. Does anyone have experience with the surgery with their son or daughter? I am a little nervous about the general anesthesia my baby will require for this
Thanks so much

Hi C.,
My son was 3 months old when I noticed my son's. I took him in and they sceduled a date. They tell you make sure he doesn't eat within 12 or 24 hours prior to surgery. Its the same day surgery so you can take your son home the same day. They cut my sons lower stomach atleast 6 inches and put a clear tape to cover the stitches. They used dissolving stitches so it heals, they disappear.
Your son may be cranky or quiet after the procedure. Its a an hour procedure. If it gets bigger,it can be painful for your son. Everything will be ok. My oldest son had one removed a few years ago, and he wanted to be active 3 days later. My son is now 13 and doing great.
My son had this when he was about 17 months old. Everything went fine. The doctors and nurses did a good job trying to keep it from being to scary for him being taken away for surgery. No matter what your going to worry and it's going to be hard. Just be that pillar of strength until he's out of sight and then you can cry. It'll all be fine.
My son, now 19, had it done when he was 4 months old. He was in so much pain before the surgery -- he cried so hard and long. Life was much better afterwards!
My son had hernia surgery at 18 months. Everything went well. The one thing I did insist on was that I went in with him and held him until he fell asleep. They gave him a little gas, I took deep long breaths and was very calm so then he did the same so they didn't have to put the gas right on his face just close to it. He fell asleep in 2 minutes if that. and I was there as soon as he woke up. It would be a totally different experience if I was unable to be there for him and they took him away to surgery. Best of luck.
