I have my son who has this inguinal hernia, he is almost 2 years old now and we just notice his hernia when he is 1 year old more, then i went to some doctors and they advised me to have this surgical procedure. but i did not do it because im afraid to do it for him because at first he is too young to have an procedure and also he is so active right now i was scared after the operation might be more risky for him since the operation is inside of abdomen. im so worried now and im planning to have the procedure when hes 4 years old at least he can manage already. what do u suggest because his inguinal hernia is on and off , it shows when he is crying and making strong.. pls advise me if its okay if i wait until he is goin to manage himself. i will be waiting for the reply. thanks

What can I do next?

I wouldn't wait. IF you can do it now, I would do it now. Kids have surgery every day and they are just fine. I think kids tend to recover faster. If it were my son, I would have it done right away as long as the doctors think its ok.

I would do it sooner rather than later. However, I totally understand your point of view. The younger they are the less traumatic the experience will be and they tend to bounce back pretty fast. I am NOT a doctor, but my husband is a paramedic and we have a 9, 6 and 4 year old. Our son had his tonsils and adenoids out a year ago @ 3 and he still remembers it. I wish now that they would have done it sooner! All in all...go with your mommy instinct. It will never fail you. :) Good luck in your decision!

Is it possible to get a second opinion? My 3 month old has a hernia, and his doctor said it would likely fix itself and to not worry about it. I'm just curious if it is really severe enough for surgery, some doctors are more prone to suggest surgery than others. Also i know that my doctor would have to send us to a consult with a surgeon who would then determine if he actually thought the surgery was necessary, so maybe you could go that route and just get another opinion and then make a choice.

My sons doc found his hernia at his 3 year check up. I met with the surgeon and he told us that we shouldn't wait too long because sometimes the hernia can become strangulated. He wasn't in any pain. The surgeon told us if he had any apin that is when it might become emergency surgery. He ended up having surgery when he was 3yrs 4 months. I was so freaked out. His surgery was in the morning, he wasn't allowed to eat or drink. Once we got him there after he was all dressed for surgery they gave him some medication to relax him. OMG he was so funny (now I know what a drunk 3 year old looks like). By them giving him that medication it actually relaxed me LOL. They gave him his IV after the put him under in the OR. After surgery he was very weepy, he cried a lot but I think that was more from the anesthesia. He only took his pain meds once and by the next day he was about 90% better. Two day after surgery you would have never even known he had surgery and I actually sent him to preschool. Good luck with whatever you decide. It's a very hard decision to make & I am happy we did it when we did.

I had the same experience as My3sons, The doc found my sons hernia at his 3 year checkup, we deceided on surgery right away because IF it were to end up in emergency surgery there could be more complications due to swelling and infection, so I felt more comfortable not taking the chance and had the surgery done in a non emergency situation. He also only used pain meds for a day or two and was back in preschool the same week. Best of luck in whatever you decide. BTW his surgery was done at a Children's hospital if that makes any difference, but it made me feel better because I knew he was in a specialists hands.
