My daughter will be 3 months this sat. The pediatrician diagnosed her w/silent reflux and she has been on Prevacid for over a month now. Sometimes I feel like she doesn't really have this issue because she has no prob. sleeping in her crib which is only slightly elivated all night long. I hate for her to have to be on meds, and she is also on carnation soy formula. She is also already teething and she's getting the ones in the back already. To me I feel like she has always had tummy issues, either constipated or diarhea. Her medication can cause either of these symtoms, and I'm just sick of her being in pain. I've heard about probiotics and was thinking of trying them, but wanted to hear what other moms thought of them???? I would love to know if my baby is "really" lactose intolerent and what is really the prob. Sometimes I give her motrin or tylenol for her teeth but it doesn't take the edge off for a while. Which I would think it would. I also felt it constipated her, so I got some little teethers teething tablets that have no side effects and they seam to be working somewhat. She doesn't sleep much during the day just short cat naps and if she does happen to sleep, she won't sleep through the night. It's very hard to pinpoint whats going on w/her. I've heard they can have ear infections and not even have symtoms??? Any advice would be great!

Hi,

I've given probiotics to both of my kids after courses of antibiotics or after stomach flu and it seems to help. I give them Kefir (on the dairy aisle), which comes in several flavors, and mix it with a little bit of juice.

Good luck!

Hi A.,
I've given my kids raw milk for a while now. They were both breastfed so they didn't drink cow's milk until they were a bit older, but raw milk has probiotics and is easier to digest than pasteurized milk. It might be worth looking into for your daughter. As long as you buy it from a reputable dairy, it is perfectly safe. It actually goes through more testing than pasteurized milk. I can't say enough good things about it - my kids aren't constipated any more, they don't have ear infections, and I do believe it keeps their immune systems working better than when they drank pasteurized milk.

I hope you can find something that works for your baby!

I give my 2 1/2 year old Probiotics for a few weeks now and I think it's wondeful, he's been constipated and having problems with his bowel movements (Now holding it in).I give him flax seed oil and probiotics. This has helped his bowels and I read about them and the benefits. Even our chiropractor said they are good.
I think if your daughter is allergic to Milk or Lastose intolerant you should stick with Soy, but I give my son Rice milk. I think your daughter's too young right now for Rice milk.
I agree with not wanting my child on meds for acid reflux, I am afraid for myself to take stuff for that, since too much can cause other problems.
My son had a few ear infections, and if you feel she may have one, do take her in, they are painful and make the kids uncomfortable..
I just took my son to the Chiropractor because I have heard it's good for them and can help with so many problems even ear infections.
I have my son on Probiotics by Udo's for Infants, you just put the dose amount in milk or juice.

Good luck

I am a microbioligist and have done some work with probiotics. There are certain bacteria in the digestive tract of infants that are found in greater numbers in breastfed infants than formula fed infants. These organisms can help digest certain foods. If your child is lactose intolerant, like mine is, feeding soy formula and adding probiotics to the diet can help. The probiotics must be high quality because one of my colleagues has tested many of them and found that they do not contain everything they are advertised to contain. I agree with the Mom who suggested kefir. Fermented foods like kefir and yogurt are very good for providing probiotics and they are usually tolerated well by lactose intolerant people like me. Both my daughter and I eat a lot of yogurt but cannot tolerate milk of any kind. I hate to see an infant on medication if their is a nutritional solution. Good luck.
