Does anyone know what you can do for "Mono". I'm taking my son to get the test today but I read even if you have it there is nothing you can do for it. My 14 year old son has been sick on and off since October. He is getting very frustrated with this and feels good one week then not the next. Any suggestions? I just started him on 1000mg vitamin C daily any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.

What can I do next?

Watch the rest of the family for symptoms. By the time you fell under the weather you were probably exposed up to six weeks before at this point probably not contagious at this point. I felt better after taking Complex b vitamins. Rest and rest and lots more rest.

Hi C.,

In addition to the vitamin C, he will need lots of rest and fluids. Unfortunately, this viral disease will have to run its course.

In terms of medications, OTC (Over The Counter) acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be used to reduce fever and pain. Antibiotics are not recommended for used because they are ineffective against viral infections and their use may cause a non-allergic rash. Penicillin or other antibiotics should ONLY be administered to treat the strep throat. Prescribed Pain Relievers are also not advised due to risk of respiratory depression.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor. If you feel he/she is giving you the brush off and not listening, get a second opinion and continue to do your research.

I don't recall exactly what we did when I had Mono at age 15, but I believe we just treated the symptoms and I rested a lot. My mom thought I was faking being sick until I passed out in Lowes from being so exhausted and turned out that I had 104 degree temp (it was the middle of the summer so I felt hot already). Just make sure he stays cool and rests and I think thats the best you can do until it passes.

I had mono when I was 15 and was sick a long time - I slept 23 hours a day - only waking up when my mom made me - and I lost a lot of weight. I missed a month of school - the doctor finally put me on oral steroids to give me some get up and go - it took a long time to really feel better - but I did - the fatigue would still come back sometimes.

Good luck.

My son had Mono 2 years ago and all you can really do is get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids. His case was really bad, but he also had this horrible rash, high fevers, and swelling and body pain. A titer test was done and determined he as Lyme Disease (was probably bitten by a tick at the barn he frequents). If he's been sick that long, I would surely also ask for other blood tests as well.

Great job on the vitamin C! I can look it up in my natural cures book, but I have it loaned out for a few days, but send me a message if you want me to look it up for you, the book is awesome and I'd be more than happy to tell you what it says. Also, you can call down to Mike's Health Collection in McKinney and they are very knowledgeable on natural herbs/vitamins to help and cure. Give them a try! Great job not loading him up with a bunch of medications! Above all, REST and WATER always help!!

I had mono as a young adult and all I could do was rest. The doctor had nothing to give me. I believe I was out of work for 2 weeks.

I am 43 yrs old and just had of mono combined with strep! Very unusual for someone my age to get it I've been told. My doctor put me on a round of antibiotics and told me to push soups & liquids for at least 3 days & to stay in bed for at least 5 days and rest or sleep as much as possible. I did that. Afterwards I had about another 4 weeks of needing a nap once a day. The doctor told me to start walking 30 minutes a day at an easy pace and to eat as much fresh foods as possible & to stay away from caffeine and fried foods. I have done that. Last week was the first week that I've felt 100% better. I'm told by others that the trick is to not over do once you start feeling better. To pace yourself because it takes several months to fully recover from it. I know with teenagers naps & rest are things that aren't in their vocabulary. Also if you son is in sports that will compound the problem. Plenty of water & a small bottle of gatorade a day are still part of my routine. I also keep fresh fruit around that I can grab and snack on. The doctor said small meals spread out helps keep your energy level more even and helps your body work with you at recovering. Hope some of this helps.

My daughter had mono last month. Luckily we caught it in time but she was still very tired. I cut all extra-curricular activities out as rest is the cure. We slowly started adding things but only as her body could handle. We also stayed out of school when necessary and got a Dr's excuse to stay out of athletics (school nurse was very helpful with us).

I had mono when I was 28. The doctor said I had been walking around with it for months. Unfortunately there really isnt much that the doctor will do. It just requires lots of rest and letting it run its course.

Unless they have made an progress on treatment in the last 20 yrs, there really is nothing you can do for Mono except rest and let it run it's course. It typically runs it's course in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Rest is the main thing I have ever heard for mono. Teans sometimes grow so fast they get extra tired, but I'd sure want the Dr. to check it out and see if he indeed has mono or someting else.

My doctor prescribed 10 days of human interferon treatment. By the third day I felt 100% better.
