My husband and I recently found out that we will be PCSing to Heidelberg Germany. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or pictures OF the housing. The ArmyOneStop site hasn't been all too helpful. I was wondering what the odds are of us being placed in a one-bedroom apartment would be, and if the odds are good, what are the one bedrooms like? Does anyone have any pictures? I've searched and searched and SEARCHED but there doesn't seem to be any available. Any tips on PCSing? HELP! :)

What can I do next?

Housing is "stairwell" apartments of 6 or 8 families divided equally per floor of 3 or 4 levels. The number of bedrooms will be determined by the age and gender of your children. I don't know the rank of your husband and whether or not you arrive at Rhein Mein or Frankfurt International (opposite sides of the airport) when you land as to how you proceed to Heildelberg. Take a few German classes and get a good dictionary to use. When you get to Heidelberg, get a city map and study it so you can get around the city. There are no one bedroom apartments on base only on the economy. The base apartments are 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms with no elevators. You may or may not have laundry facilities in apartments or in the basement (usually 6 washers and 7 dryers and assigned times for usage. Schools are on post from K to 12. Shopping on the economy is different as all stores close by 6:30pm nightly; the first Saturday of the month stores stay open until 6pm, No stores are open to grocery shop on Sundays. The base I should say post will be open on the weekends to shop. You will have to study for your driver's license of 100 questions 50 written/50 signs (no words) and pass before you can drive on roads. Travel is great as you are near Munich (BMW), Stutgaart (Mercedes Benz), Kaiserslatuern, Ramstein, Frankfurt (music concerts). Paris is about 20 hours away. Salzburg at the Austrian/German border. Christmas is a big deal there with many markets. Lots of history to visit and trace about.

Clean out all unnecessary items that you do not want to store. There are many shops and places to get quality furniture, grandfather/coo coo clocks, collectibles.

I give you these ideas for thought being an Air Force wife who lived in the Hunsruck area (Hahn AFB).

Above all enjoy your time in Europe and see as much as you possibly can in all the surrounding countries - Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, England, France, and Spain. There are or were tours scheduled from the Recreation Center. Send me a note and I'll try to find my packed away items.

I don't know anything about the army housing, but I have visited Heidelberg as a tourist and I loved it! I think you will be very happy there! It is a beautiful city with a lot of fun things to do, great food, good shopping, etc. I hope you love it as much as I did.

I've been in several of the apartments in Heidelberg area, but I don't have any pictures. They are all what's called stairwell living, not bad at all. Heidelberg is a very nice area. The quarters that I've visited were all well taken care of. I lived in Mannheim, but I worked right outside of Heidelberg. They have a hospital there, PX, and other points of interest. Even without children, you will probably get a two bedroom, I don't even think they have one bedrooms, I can honestly say I've never seen one. I'm sorry that I didn't have any pictures but I can tell you that you will love the area. Take advantage of all of the travel opportunities that present itself. I've visited more countries than cities and it's mainly because we were stationed in Germany on 3 separated occassions. Have fun and enjoy these next 3 years.

We used to be stationed in Sembach AB near Landstuhl. ENJOY HEIDELBERG!!! We loved visiting there. Don't know a thing about the housing, but what I will say is, it doesn't matter. You're in EUROPE! On someone else's dime! Don't stay on base. Go out, explore, see as much as you possibly can, the less time spent in housing, the better :)
