I will be traveling by airplane next month with 2 children, 2 years old & 10 months. I haven't traveled by plane since 9/11 and all the new regulations. The 10 month old will still be on formula. What can and can't I bring from home? Will I be able to bring bottles with water for formula or do I have to purchase that at the airport? Can my 2 year old bring a sippy cup filled with juice? Please give me any advice.

You can bring formula and juice...but it will be inspected. My suggestion (I just flew yesterday) is to bring powdered formula and buy water (or use the faucet in the bathroom) and juice once you are past security. Your children will have to go through security. They will probably have to remove their shoes. Wear easily removable clothes...jackets have to come off. Pakc them a little bag and make sure that everything fits in it when going through security.

Good luck!

My husband and I have flown twice with our 2 young children and it has been very easy for us. You can check out the federal aviation administration website at faa.gov and it outlines exactly what you may and may not bring. We did get stopped the last time with our kids milk in sippy cups but it was very simple, security made me remove the lid and they place a tester strip in the cup and that was it.

Be prepared for anything to happen at security. I have passed through with my children easy as can be at times while other times were a nightmare. Once the security agent tried to separate me from my two year old for a couple of MINUTES with her on one side of the metal detector and me on the other. I told him he had lost his mind if he thought I was going to comply with his directions, and pulled my 2 yr. old back through the metal detector to stand with me. I had another agent insist that I try to send my double stroller through the xray machine while I was holding my 4 month old. No one helped me. Best idea is to make sure you and your husband plan out ahead of time who will take which child, who will go first, who will get the stroller, who will get the valuables on the other end, etc. And have everything prepped before you get in the security line (shoes off, etc.)

For the plane, in case you haven't heard of them, we use Earplanes earplugs (they worked even on my 4 month old) for the ear pressure problem. They equalize the pressure and work wonderfully! Just make sure you have a backup pair ready in case one of the earplugs falls out.

Hi A.,

We lived in Germany for a few years, so we've done our fair share of flying recently.

Typically you can bring on liquids for children, but they will be tested. I would bring the unmixed formula, and then buy water at the airport to mix.

Just a tip on traveling with little ones. Pack as light as you can. It's tough keeping kids and all their gear in tow through an airport.

Also, strollers....can be checked at the gate. However, depending on the size, you may or may not be able to get it at the destination gate. They may actually CHECK it at the gate instead of just putting it in the hold. Ask what the policy is when you check in.

There are typically changing tables in the walls in the bathroom. The bathrooms are small on the plane...but totally doable. I've done a complete blowout change in one of those bathrooms! ;-)

Children under the age of 2 can sit on your lap. Just keep in mind... they will be on your lap for that time. It can be tough if it's a long flight. We've done both. Children over 2, need their own seat. They aren't REQUIRED to have the carseat on the plane, but I will say, now that my daughter is almost 2, the next time we fly, I will be bringing it. Kids are used to car seats. The last time we flew, my daughter was 10 months old. She had her own seat, no carseat. Talk about WIGGLE issues! oiy. Next time... car seat.

Ok, that's what I have.

Have a great trip!

I have recently traveled with sippy cups. On the way there I had 4 cups full of juice and got no questions about it (I have both a 1 yo and a 2 yo). But with delays on the plane, and no source of refills, I found they were not enough (not to mention if they throw it where you can't reach again). So on the way back i brought 6 sippy cups full of juice. I got pulled aside in security where they tested the liquid in each one, LOL. They let me take them, it was just an annoying delay.

You are currently allowed to bring one bottle of water. You can bring an empty sippy cup. I flew after 9/11 and they frisked my daughter, Anna, at the airport in London. I mean frisked too, not like the wand here they go up and down with you. I mean they rubbed her skin everywhere about an inch at a time like she was a loaf of bread. They frisked me too. Our foster daughter and my husband nothing, and with my husband's thick beard he looked iffy at best. Anyhow they do babies frequently as stuff is hid on them alot, especially bombs from what they say. My daughter was 3 at the time and says "You're not a nice man, I don't like you." Everyone says I should of passed on the frisking, you don't get to pass or we wouldn't be flying home.

The best thing to do is check with the airline or go online for the ever-changing security rules. I traveled last weekend and there were separate security lines for people with small children. I think it depends on what airport you are using. Happy trails!
