Something as small/innocent as a paper cut can cause an infection. See if the antibiotics help, if not like others have said ask for an Xray.
I have been told that my child has an infection in her knuckle by the doctor. I noticed swelling of her knuckle the other day and she would not use it. Took her in and that is what they think the issue is...I have to admit I was worried she has hurt it somehow and broke ti...But how in the world did she get an infection in her knuckle. The doctor says it could be from an infection by her fingernail that migrated to her knuckle but I don't ever remember seeign any issues there either. Anyone gone through this...She is on antibiotics and ibuprofin for a few days but still no change.
Hard to see her strggle with not being able to use it and the pain :(

if it is red and hot draw a line around it with a pen to make sure the redness doesn't grow. My daughter had cellulitis in her chin which became very inflamed, red and hot to the touch. They had to give her antibiotic shots in her butt. Poor thing!!!!
.
Infection? Is it red and hot and swollen? Sounds infected... she could have had a hangnail or something, and yeah, I can see something icky getting in such a well used area... If she's finished the antibiotic and it's still inflamed, go back for a 2nd opinion. If she suddenly develops a fever, call the doc immediately. Try to keep the area clean, dry, covered with bactracin (it's neoporin + antibiotic) and a bandaid.
If you are concerned then have an x-ray done to be sure. It is possible for infections to move through the body.
It's very possible for infections to settle in joints. Joints can also become inflamed and sore without being broken.
Continue the antibiotics and ibuprofen. Also, try letting her soak her hand in warm epsom salts. It's very soothing and can help with the discomfort.
My son started complaining about his thumb hurting and he's not a complainer so I knew it had to hurt. There were no scrapes, no bruises, no swelling. I thought maybe he jammed it playing ball with his friends. He showed it to a friend who is a teacher at his school and she couldn't see anything wrong.
I went to pick him up later and he turned his arm just right and I could see a bright red streak running up his arm. I took him immediately to the hospital and he had an infection. There was not a mark or abrasion on his skin at all and how he got it is still unknown, but it was an infection none the less. It was extremely painful. His was bad enough that he was on I.V. antibiotics for two days. It went away and it's never happened again.
It's puzzling because there was no physical injury to blame it on, but these things do happen.
Your daughter should be feeling better in a few days.
If not, get her re-evaluated, for sure.
Best wishes.
