Infant up for 2 Hours in Middle of Night

Help! My 3 week old has decided to be awake for 2 hours in the muddle of the night. He nurses well throughout the day - he feeds every 3 hours - but then for some reason is up for 2 hours after his 1:00 a.m. feeding. I swaddle him, rock him, give his a pacifier, give him gas drops and do white noise but still - he is up. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

You are on the right track.. just fine tune that feeding.
When your baby wakes up in the middle of the night for that feeding, do not turn on the lights, try to feed in the dark (or just with a nightlight)and do not speak to the baby. This will help him want to go back to sleep, because nothing interesting is happening. Right now he eats and is looking at you and listening to you and this is fun for him.

We also noticed with our child that the baby wipes were cold from the air conditioning and would totally wake her up, so we purchased a wipe warmer.. It was a life saver. The wipes were warm and did not send the shock of cold on her bottom..

Mine did that right before she got her days and nights mixed up. What helped my little one get on the right track was her fishy aquarium that attached to her crib. It has water noises and soft music. Great thing about it was it lasted for like 5 mins to 30 minutes. I love that thing. My only other suggestion is that maybe your doing to much and it wakes him up even more? Good Luck! =)

Hi W. - your tiny one is still adjusting to your schedule. Be patient - I know you're tired. Interestingly, he was probably awake this time in your womb, you just slept through it. Babies in the womb usually sleep during the day - the rocking motion of our activity puts them to sleep. This is not unusual for a newborn and something we moms just have to bear up under.

What I would do is wait - Feed him, change him, make him comfy and put him back down in his bassinet. Go ahead and lay down nearby - he may grunt and do his little newborn talk but he's fine being awake in his crib.

A great book for new moms is The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg. I highly recommend it. It was easy to read and well-indexed for those "urgent" questions and how-to's.

Sounds pretty typical for an infant. Try (TRY) to enjoy seeing the world at the hour most people are catching some zzzzzzzz's. Sleep when the baby sleeps, otherwise you'll go mad. Congrats on the little O.!

my daughter did that too... what i ended up doing was keeping her awake more during the day. people say "never wake a sleeping baby" but i did. i monitored how long she would normally take a nap and i would wake her up about 3/4 of the way through it. that way, shes tired by night time and will sleep through the night. i know its probably wrong, but it worked

I'm sorry to let you know this but they do not sleep through the night til at least 3 months and sometimes six months. You need to get rest throughout the day. Mother's knowledge - sleep when baby sleeps, up when baby up.
