my crib mattress is bowing up and leaving gaps on the sides of the crib. Anyone have this problem? I was going to try new sheets to see if maybe my old ones shrunk. If I bend it the other way it will stay flat but once I put on the sheets, up it goes. and I layer the sheets for those late night issues. my little one is 4mo and the mattress is about 2 yrs old. They don't go bad do they??
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took off the double set of sheets and mattress pad and the mattress fits snug in the crib. I guess I will just hope for no blowouts overnight!! Thanks for all the input.

Any mattress can "go bad" and be less supportive. If the mattress is bowing and leaving gaps, is it not safe. I'd replace it. You can use that mattress for a toddler bed later and get more use out of it, but it doesn't sound safe as it is. If it is JUST that the sheets are short, get new ones, but if it's really the mattress, it's not something I would keep.

I'd buy a new mattress. Mine never does this. Good luck!

that doesn't sound normal, if you have had it for two years already, you've gotten your money out of it. ours had a metal frame (like wire but not bendy) and it never did that, ours was the S. baby to use it.

I would just go buy a new one. We got the Kolkraft brand one from Walmart 4 years ago and we still use it in her toddler bed. It's held up well and it was cheap. Since your little one is so young, I'd be scared to use a bowing one, unless it's just an issue of new sheets.

You need to get a new mattress, your child's safety is infinitely more important than trying to get by with the mattress you have.

This one is awesome, is non-allergenic, is anti-microbial, water-resistant, and fits cribs and toddler beds. It has a 7-year manufacturer's limited warranty, and we love it. $39 at walmart.com, they ship it to the store for free or to your home for 97 cents. I was sold on it by the high customer rating, and added my own.

I would try larger sheets and see if that keeps the edges down, but if not then definitely should be replaced

Not normal, even if the sheets are too small. If the sheets are too small, they should pop off the corners of the mattress; if they are causing the mattress itself to bow up like this, the mattress is too weak.

Get a new one AND new sheets to fit it. Kids can get caught in gaps between the mattress and side of the crib; kids also can be tangled in ill-fitting crib sheets and think of the consequences for an infant who can't untangle herself or even turn over. Get good, deep-sided, well-fitted new sheets and a new mattress. The mattress and sheets you have are increasing the risk of suffocation and strangulation especially in a very young infant.

This happened with my granddaughter's crib mattress. Turned out the sheets were too small.

Its possible that its the layering of the sheets. Do you not use a waterproof mattress cover? There are sheet protectors that you can tie on top of the sheet that help also.
