Inexpensive Home Phone Service

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive home phone service? I am looking for the most basic of services... local calling plus emergency services. Caller ID would be a bonus but not necessary. Verizon just raised my rate to $35 and I no longer want to give them my business. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Be careful going the cheaper routes. My sister chose magic jack. Her computer smells like it is burning and the phone lines are no longer working :(

I just asked my husband and he thinks that we pay 12 a month. He could be way off though. We have the comcast bundle. (internet, phone and cable) All together we pay 160.

I don't think $35 is a lot. Does that include long distance?

My husband and I added a line for $10 per month (plus tax and fees) to our already existing cell phone account, we kept our our land line number for the cell phone. It gives you the basics (text is per text rather than unlimited etc) we can still call long distance if needed, but we have our cell phones so who needs to. I can't stand telemarketers so doing this for me was worth the $10.

Do you have a cell phone? We have Sprint, and we can add a land-line for $20 a month (I think). I'm sure other cell companies have a similar deal.

If you have Verizon for cell service you can add your landline number for $10 extra per month.

There is also Voipo which is about the same as above, maybe a little cheaper. I've had it, and it's ok. Some weird things with people calling you sometimes, like you can hear them, but they can't hear you.

We've been considering dropping our home service, but decided to try Magic Jack since it is so incredibly cheap. Well, you get what you pay for. It is AWFUL! We can barely hear anything on it, and they don't have a customer service phone line at all. You have to chat with someone online to get any sort of help. I think we're going to get rid of our home phone completely, and only keep a phone line for internet.

Good luck with your decision; I just wanted to warn you against Magic Jack.
