Hello. I am the mother of a very active 11 month old. He has been walking since 9 months and is extremely active. With the winter coming, I am running out of places to take him outside the house. We will go to the mall and library this winter, but does anyone have any other ideas of either free or reasonably priced places to take a young toddler as the weather gets cold? Also, any ideas for fun indoor activities outside of the typical peekabo and chase games? I appreciate any ideas/help.

What can I do next?

Hi:

I'm not sure where you live or what your budget is...but the best thing I've ever done since I decided to be a stay-at-home mom is join the YMCA. It's about $80 a month, but it includes an amazing pool, 2-hr a day childcare for you to work out or take a class, a lot of the classes are free for members, they have an awesome lobby that we sit and have lunch in or talk w/other people, there are free family nights sometimes, and a lot more...I really get my money's worth with small children. The colder the weather the better, we have so much fun there and its healthy/priced reasonably. Just a thought!

Playgroups. I would check around with neighbors and your community or city government to see if there are any playgroups or other activities that you two can join in. My city sends out all kinds of information every season for activities for people of all ages. Playgroups can take place at your local recreation center, so call there too. Maybe you could join a community group that offers activities for toddlers? Your library should be able to give you some information as well. Also, contact local dance studios in your area, they may offer music/dance sessions that you can participate in with your child and sometimes they too offer play groups too. Check your local YMCA, see if they can offer any ideas.

Good luck,

MC

I would get some interactive toys that are both entertaining and inexpensive. My boys have all loved their train sets and Lego Duplo Blocks since they were really little. If you're gutsy you can try some fingerpainting, large crayons and/or PlayDoh. Sensory activities are always fun. You might want to invest in a sand table if you have a place to put it, too. Little Einstien movies and simple books are good for quiet time. Hope this helps - S.

Hi D., our recreation center in Roseville offers several programs. One of them is indoor park. They have all sorts of toys for the kids to play with in the gym at the rec center and the kids love it. Plus it only cost $2.00 everytime you go. It is on Tue. and Thu. 10:30 to noon. Also malls like lakeside have play areas for free. Right now at our library they are also giving away free passes to museums. You get to choose from about 10 different museums. We got a pass for 4 for the Childrens museum in Detroit, we have never been there but we are going to check it out, for free why not. McDonalds is always a fun place to play, there is one on 13 and Harper in St. Clair Shores that is for younger kids.
