Increasing Milk Supply

Up until now, I have had no problem with my milk production for my 5 month old son. With a huge stressor last weekend, I have noticed that my production has drastically decreased. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase my milk supply without going crazy? (I already drink 10-12 glasses of water and have a pretty healthy diet). I work part-time and have a 3 year old at home so pumping ever hour is out of the question! LOL! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Lots of rest and the Fenugreek worked. Oh and putting him to breast more often too! Thanks ladies for all of your wonderful help! We are back to normal and right on track! Lots of milk for him so I can continue to exclusively breast feed until he's 6 months (hopefully).

it's hard to keep up, I know. Have you tried Mother's Milk tea or fenugreek (either tea or tincture). It helped me. Also, oatmeal is supposed to help. Pumping whenever you can can't hurt. Also, just keep plugging away and you should be able to catch up with your little guy. Getting more stressed out can't help, so just try to give yourself the space to get there.

Check out www.kellymom.com. Fenugreek (3-4 3 X a day) can help, also oatmeal, mother's milk tea. Some people notice a significant increase when they keep their prtoein intake over 125 g a day. Good luck!

Lots of good herbal advice out there.

Why do you think your production has decreased if you are not pumping?

Stress can cause problems but nursing will help those relaxing and mothering hormones happen and will help.

If baby is demanding more- could it be a growth spurt? You are on the cusp of solid foods (if you want).

Have you tried contacting La Leche?

Just had the same problem myself and I exclusivly pump so I am always pumping and that did not help. Fenugreek 4 3x a day for about 4 days. Once you smell your sweat and urine is smelling like maple syrup you have taken enough and you can quit taking it. It is very inexpensive at the local health food shop. Good luck

I think if you try to keep nursing as often as possible your milk supply will increase to meet the demand. I know when kids get bigger and have growth spirts more milk will come in to meet their increased appetite. I think if you just keep doing what you are doing it should come back. If not I would try to contact a lactation consultant. I know there actually is a supplement you can take to increase milk production, but I forgot what it is called. Try www.onehotmama.com
Good luck! K.

The two responses given you are good ones! I have breastfed six children and suffered from a gamet of problems, so even though I hate to be a trumpeter, trust me, I can sympathize. One seldom mentioned issue in infant lactation is that male children do a have a few slight differences in the way they respond to the breast as opposed to girls!! They can be easier to nurse, and they can be harder. I found it easier to nurse a son when I remained very rested and not around a lot of activity. A serene environment is what I'm talking about. Very hard if your a working mom, but there are some major things you can do, and success will be determined by finding the ones that are right for your situation. Start by taking several days to destress and bring your son to bed with you. Every non-active hour can be "build the supply hour" it does mean you'll have him permanently attached, it is just meant to boost your bodies call to keep it coming. The more he sucks, the more determined your bodies response will be. It just takes a confident assurance in the process. Whenever you are up and caring for yourself, make choices that will build your bodies tools to get the job done. Hot/warm showers are relaxing and drain out milk, thus also stimulate production. For diet, right now, if you are not lactose intolerate, turn as many of those glasses of water a day into lowfat milk. If you can't do all milk, try three glasses of lowfat milk and two glasses of soy milk(very inportant for your female body), flavor it anyway you like(Chocolate, raspberry...MMMM mix in fresh fruit of your choice and a few ice cubes and blend!!! Smoothie Heaven!!) and then two glasses orange or papaya juice for the vitamin C and A. Get a good raw vegetable salad daily if possible, at minimum four days a week. Having all the tools abundantly and easily delivered to your body should quickly reverse the situation, provided the stress factors are greatly reduced. But letting him nurse at leisure is by far the least stressful way to increase the supply. Don't forget to start a new organic multivitamin. You could even check out the herbs that are known to cause milk increases(As suggested!). I like peppermint green tea, or orange lemon for the soothing medicinal effects. If you feel overstimulated already, alternate with cool showers, cool compresses, intead of warm, to get your system quieted down. It likes to just freeze up under stress!! One great tip I have found useful, if not a bit weird, is to put one whole large fresh cold cabbage leaf in each bra cup for breast duct blockages, increasing supply, and fighting infection. If you get hot spots that don't go away, or run a fever yourself, you may want to go to the doctor for a check up and possibly an anitbiotic. Don't forget to take lots of yogurt or Acidophilus supplements regularly, especially after childbirth and after antibiotics. Any questions, write me, I will try to clarify any problems you may be having. Best wishes, and God Bless your awesome son!! XO L.

There is an all natural herb that you can take to increase your supply. I think it is spelled fenugreek. Try a health food store or talk toyour doctor there is also a prescription that you can get.

Hello Nancy

Try take to 4-5 seeds of fenugreek with water at night. Every other day. Dont take every day as it is very hot for yr tummy. You can also try Jaggery and cummin seeds together. Take cube of jaggery in a saucepan, crush it first. Put some butter in the pan , add half tbsp cummin seeds, when they crackle add crushed jaggery in the pan. It will become smooth and melt. Turn it off, once warm take 2-3 sppons of it. Have this for 2-3 days. But at one time 2-3 spoons. Reheat the mixture everytime u wana have, in the same pan once it melts have it. as jaggery will become hard at room temp. Hope it helps let me know.
