My daughter who is 8 has just recently had a few expisodes of incontinence while reading in bed. Has anyone ever experienced this? She will be reading and later will come and get me and say that she thinks she may have wet herself while reading. She doesn't know how it happened or even when it is happening. She just gets cold while reading and realizes that the bed is wet. She says that she gets so caught up in the reading that she doesn't know whats going on around her. This has happened three times in the past few weeks - only at night while she is reading in bed. I have an appointment to take her to her pediatrician but she has no symptoms of a UTI. Anyone that has experienced this and has advice please respond.
Thanks,
Tam
---Just got back from the Dr. and she said that there are no infections and she seems healthy. She did say that certain acidic juices can mimic an infection and cause incontinence sporadically. I am not sure I buy this because it has only happened in her bed while she is caught up in reading. Could a 8 year old really be so caught up in reading that she just doesn't realize that her body is saying go to the bathroom???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well as the doctor suggested we took her off all acidic juices (she was a big lemondade drinker) and that did help. Apparently, acidic drinks in young kids can mimic a UTI and cause them to wet themselves easier, which for my daughter would be when she was sooo caught up in the current story she was reading. No lemanade for us has equaled no more accidents while reading.
Thanks for all the advice.

i agree with the last post. If it was truly incontinence, then I would think that it would happen periodically through out the day, not just when she's in bed. Because that has to do with a lack of control in the bladder muscles and how can she have control the whole rest of the day and not then. My grandfather when through this after prostrate surgery.

generally speaking, when we consume something our bodies will have some sort of output about 30 minutes after the fact. you could maybe try setting a timer either after the meal or snack so that when it goes off she has to get up and try to go. She may not have to go then, but the bell going off would at least interrupt her concentration to be aware of her surroundings and body needs.

Hi T.!
I agree with the timer suggestion. When she's reading, go in and remind her every once in awhile to break her concentration. She'll get right back into the book after a small break. I know when I get my nose in a book, my girls say, "There she goes again! She's lost in her own world!" And I am. I get so into books that if anyone wants my attention, they have to physically touch me. I just love books and that's my release for stress. So I know how she can get. I must say, how completely WONDERFUL that she has developed such a passion for reading at age eight!! Kudos to you for encouraging that!!! Hope this helps.

I have heard of kids getting so caught up in playing and not going to the bathroom and then having accidents, but this is the first of this type of thing. Is she maybe getting so involved in the book that she just forgetts, like the playing thing? I can't imagine that incontenience would just happen at certain times like that. I would imagine that incontenience would happen all the time, or most at least.
Good luck to you and i hope this helps...
I think your on the right track about going to pediatrician.

Yes, I think it can happen. My youngest went through the same thing, only it happened at school. For a week or two he had to call me to bring him pants. He would get so wrapped up in what he was doing that he wouldn't listen to his body. I've done much the same, without the accident, of course, but I'll be reading and all of a sudden I have to go and have to go now. It's the same with them. Reading takes a lot of consentration at this age and she may not be listening to her body's early signals. I wouldn't worry. Just remind her to go while she is reading. A verbal reminder may just make her listen to her body more.

my 8 yr old daughter is having the same problems, except its when she's asleep. she has no signs of a UTI. she had a procedure done where they put a cathater in her and took pictures of her bladder filling up and emptying. the size of her bladder is normal, they say its just really irritated. she is going in to see a urologist next week. they have put her on pills to help her stop wetting the bed, but they are not helping. you might want to try the cathater thing. its was pretty painless. they numbed her before they put it in.

I know personally when I was growing up that I was big into reading. I mean... stay up all night and forget the whole world existed into reading. I would sometimes try to wait until the next chapter, and then just cant put the book down onto the next chapter, etc. until whoops there went my pee. my mother started ripping up my books to try to break this habit. if your daughter is reading them while you are awake why not check in on her every twenty minutes or so. It may seem like policing but the distraction might pull her away from the book world she is currently sucked into. As for after bedtime reading, try to take the books away, I would never recommend ripping them up like my mom did, but if she stays up reading all night long, it impacts school and social interactions causing stress which might be another reason for her escaping into the fiction world. Has she been having incontinence problems at school?
