In Pain!!! Help!! - Caldwell,KS

I'm a 22 year old who had a baby about 7 months ago, and after the mandatory 6 weeks, I got an IUD put in. Since I've had it, my husband says that I've become a changed person, and he's right. I'm more emotional, more b!tchy, and everytime we have sex, I have sharp pains and bleeding. The bleeding lasts a couple of days afterwards, but the pain ends within a couple of hours. Has anyone had experience with this kind of problem? What should I do about it? Should I take it out, or just see if the dr. needs to readjust?? It's a Merina IUD, the one with progesterone or whatever that hormone is.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, thanks everyone for the help!! I went to my dr. on Friday, and he said that the pain I am experiencing is normal, my body is still healing from having the baby. He said that people could have pain like this for up to 18 months after the baby is born, and it had nothing to do with the IUD...had to get a sonogram when I went, and I freaked out thinking he knew something I didn't...LOL!!

I had the same problem for about 6 to 8 months. I went to all sorts of gyn appointments and they all told me that some women experience this problem for a little while. It is painful but it will ge better. But if you feel that it is a major problem call your doctor and see what the dr says

I am not a doctor but I say get it out. Anything that causes you pain like that needs removed. I ignored pain for four years and at 28 had to have a hystorectomy. No more kids for me. Protect your body! There are better and safer methods.
Good Luck. Candi

B., I have the Mirena and I love it. Has your doc checked positioning at all since you had it placed? Maybe that would put you a little more at ease. Also, I had the pain and bleeding at first too. It goes away before too long. As to the moods, it's not supposed to have an effect. You've recently had a baby, so life as you knew it has changed. You're probably getting less sleep, and you've had to make adjustments to your whole life. Maybe that is the contributing factor for the moods. Try taking some time just for you and see how that helps. If you're having these issues and still have questions definately see your doc, it's what they're there for.

Beeca- I somewhat feel your pain! I had the same IUD put in about 2 years ago. In the beginning, it was uncomfortable and some issues with it. CALL YOUR DR!!!!! It could've been inserted incorrectly or it could've moved and be in the wrong place and if so, it coule be bad for your health as well as for contracption... After having it 2 years, I don't even notice it anymore. My periods haven't stopped like they were supposed to, but they only last a day or two at most. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I am 25 years old, with a son that is 9 1/2 months; i have the same mirena IUC and i have not had much cramping or any of the symptoms that you are having; i have had it in since last June and have been period free for about 5 months; i wonder if you have a perforiated uterus because i have read that can be one of the side effects; it can push through the side of your uterus; have you called your DR?

I also have an IUD, but I have a lot of trouble with anything that produces a hormone, so mine is copper. I consulted with several other IUD users before deciding to get mine. Most of what I heard was similar from woman to woman so it seemed like a no-brainer. Since then I have had a period every two weeks, for 7-8 days. EVERY TWO WEEKS! Now there's a reason to be b!tchy!

The trouble you are experiencing sounds very familiar to all the issues I have had with every form of hormone-producing birth control I have used (several varieties of pill, depo-provera). I am not sure what other methods you have used and your experience with them, but at first guess, that's the thought I jump to. If you are not getting the results or comfort you expect, get that sucker traded in for something different. Your peace of mind is not worth the hits that a device intended to make our lives better is putting to you.

I also don't know how long you have given your IUD a try. Good rule of thumb is try for 6 months and decide, unless your misery is unbearable. For me, I am giving this lady one more month and then making a decision. On a side note, I was told by a nurse practitioner in my late teens to try takng vitamin B-6 when I feel all "out of whack". And boy-howdy did it change my life!! It's over the counter, inexpensive, helps with digestions and somehow regulates the "emotion-overload". Hope this helps!! A.

There is another request in here for information on this IUD. Sounds like it might be a problem product!! Get it out immediatley. Years ago, my mother had one that got displaced and caused all kinds of trauma to her uterus followed by lots of infection. The pill has to be easier! Progesterone does change your moods severley! Progesterone is also in the DepoProvera Shot...dont even try that one!! Get it out and see if your problems prevail, but I bet it fixes everything when it is gone!

Hi Bekka, I had an IUD after my daughter was born. I had one for a year, and then had another year one put in. However, I had complications with that one. I had abnormal bleeding and severe abdominal pain. I couldn't even stand up. I tried and fell to the floor. I was trying to get to the bathroom, and I hurt so badly I couldn't. Thank goodness I had a roommate, she heard me fall, and took me to the ER. I had to have my IUD removed. After that, everything stopped. You really need to get to your doctor and tell him/her what's going on. You may have to have yours removed.

Make an appointment with your doctor immediately. I also have the Mirena, but have not experienced any of those problems. I did spot for about 6 weeks after it was first in, but that's about it. If you have sharp pains, bleeding, and mood swings, there is definitely something going on that needs to be addressed. It could be the Mirena, or something else, or some combination. Your doctor can examine you and help you decide what to do. Bottom line - STOP SUFFERING and get some help. Good luck to you -

I've got the same IUD (mirena) and haven't had any problems with it. Make sure to have your doctor check that it's correctly in place. I have had major mood swings, but not sure if I can blame it on the IUD (although I really didn't have them quite so severe beforehand). Even though the hormone released by it is so low I believe it could cause side effects like that. But sex shouldn't be painful with bleeding and stuff if it's in there correctly. Another possible reason could be endometriosis??? Just visit your doctor and get checked out. Good luck! :)

hi B.,
I have the the same IUD, and the only thing i have is cramping before my peirods. I would guess that the mood swings could maybe be postpartum depression. It can come in many forms, and mood swings could be one of them. The pain after sex could be due to your labor, not knowing how that was, i can't really say for sure. But with my daughter i had a long labor, and a 4th degree tear and it took about 8months for things to get back to nomal, and even today i still have pain after sex, esp in the tear (and i only tore a little with my son). I am not sure if the IUD could cause this, but if you are not sure call your OBGYN
take care
J.

Hi B..

I just had my IUD removed after 14 months of discomfort. Mine was a copper IUD. I had an ultrasound to ensure my IUD was in the correct position, it was, but the pain and bleeding didn't improve. Agaisnst my doctors wishes I decided to have it removed. I'll tell you this, the removal was a BREEZE. I was SO upset that it would hurt (insertion was) but I was surprised that the removal was so easy. Luckily for me the bleeding hasn't occured at all since I got it out.

Good luck. Maybe you could look into the NuvaRing or a vasectomy for your husband.

i have this too. my son is 4 and i have had the IUD since my 6 week appt. the pain and the bleeding is from the IUD "shifting". when you have sex you are moving the IUD and its poking your uteris. the scraping is causing the bleeding. I have actually had my IUD taken out and reinserted and i still have all the same problems. i jsut suffer through it cause i have not been happy with any other form of birth control. the pain and bleeding could also be caused by a cyst on your ovary. i had that problem as well. i would have the doc check you out to be on the safe side.

You should get it out and find an alternative. I had an IUD in for about 2 weeks. At least call your doctor. Your problems are not normal.

Definitely do something about it! You should not be having to deal with that! My aunt had an IUD after her third child and she is a very petite woman, and it just didn't work with her body. I don't know much about it, whether it can be adjusted or what. But especially if it's effecting your emotions in a negative way, I would personally want to pursue another kind of birth control. Even if something else requires more maintenance or time, it's more worth it if there is less pain and emotional side effects!
