hi moms! i think i'm a little behind in this dept, but we've been looking into preschools for my firstborn daughter, who will be 4 in june. we are catholic, but we are open to sending her to a school that's not. so far we went to a open house at immaculate heart of mary, which was nice and the class size seemed nice & relatively small, which i like. i'm a little nervous about a more 'public' school. i'm not sure why, but i think part of it is the classes seem to tend to be larger and the student to teacher ratio is higher. so far we've only visited one school but have been reading a lot about the others and hope to visit more very soon. so, mommies, any schools you would promote to a nervous mom?? or hear anything bad/good/or ugly about any of the area schools??
thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
My son has gone to Eastminster Preschool for the past 2 years. He did young 4's and this year is in young 5's. We LOVE that school. I wish we didn't have to switch schools. The teachers are excellant and the classes stay pretty small. There are 26 kids in my sons class but there are 3 teachers (real teachers) so there is about a 8 to 1 ratio. When he was in young 4's it was a 6 to 1 ratio. Make sure when you are looking to ask if they are real teachers and not just assistants. When I was looking I was surprized that some places would have 1 certified teacher and the rest were teacher assistants. I believe IHM have all real teachers. Anyway, good luck searching.
Chris
P.S. Eastminster is located close to IHM. Its on Woodward between Plymouth and Breton.

My kids go to Tri Unity Christian. The preschool teacher is spectacular. She has had all three of my kids and they all love her. She is a high energy get down on the floor with the kids kind of teacher. She has lots of great learning activities for the kids (very fun) My kids learned great social skills with her and advanced academically also. They also have the option of full days 3x per week for 4 year olds or half days. I found it very difficult to run back and forth at 11:30 every day my child had school when I had littler ones. It was always during there nap time!! So full days is a nice option. Also if you think it would be too much for your child at first you can always change to full days later in the year or move her from full days to half days. You can also find people to carpool with - lots live in Kentwood. The neatest thing about TCS is the Christian atmospher. Give them a call @ 534-TUCS.

I do not usually respond to posts on this board, but I wanted to tell you about my sons preschool. It is Second Congregational Preschool , which is on the NE side of Grand Rapids. I cannot say enough good things about it. My son is on his second year there and absolutely loves it! The classes are not huge, they have three teachers at all times, educational field trips, and the teachers are really devoted to the children. I know it is on the other side of town for you, but it is worth the drive if it is possible for you. It is in a church, they pray before meals, but it doesn't push a certain branch of christianity. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

My daughter went to St. Mark's. (on 52nd. near Kalamazoo.) We were very happy there. I've known others who have sent their kids to Explore n Grow (at Kentwood Community Church) and to Kentwood Child Development Center (at Kentwood Christian Church) and have been pleased...
