I'm Sick of Winter!!! - a Vent

What is this winter you speak of....? ;)
(looks at weather app.. 88 today, 88 tomorrow, 84 on Wednesday..)
I would like somewhere with Seasons, but snowing in April doesn't sound like much of one.

I live in Michigan, have also lived in Massachusetts, so I am used to winter weather, and I like it when it actually happens IN WINTER. But now I feel like, okay, enough already! I don't like it when it gets to be 90 degrees with 100% humidity in the summer either! Also, can't stand the bugs!

The non-stop gray skies, cold, and rain out here the past few weeks I swear have been making me depressed. Yesterday was 39 with a bit of rain but I still had to get my daughter out to the playground because I thought the both us were doing to go nuts! Fortunately it dried up and warmed up a bit later in the day and this week is supposed to be warmer, but still rainy.

Plus, my husband's work is seasonal and he's been laid off all winter. He's been able to collect unemployment but he's only got a few weeks left and he STILL has not been called back to work because it's been so cold! Argh!

I do like winter, I just don't like it happening in the spring. We are having a bit of mini-blizzard this morning. My kids are registered to start soccer on May 1st, but with so much snow on the ground I don't see how that is going to happen.

I know you are just venting... but if you really hate it so much, why NOT consider moving at some point? You only get this one life... why spend it in a climate you detest? You don't even enjoy the first snowfall. The very first one each season.

I live where it is hot/humid most of the year. Grossly humid--as in your clothes just stick to you the moment you step outside, and your glasses fog up when you walk out of the air conditioning (or sometimes if you roll the car window down). I thought I would LOVE cold climates. We visited NH once, with an eye to relocate there. It rained pretty much the entire time and was cold, and we cut our visit short and came home. Never looked back.

You can always go visit your family. Why be miserable 3/4 of the year? That's 3/4 of your LIFE.

You are talking to a person who absolutely loves winter...in November-February! Not in April! Ugh so over it too. T-ball to start next week...I hope!

Lol! Yes, I hear ya. Utah winters... well, really just suck. They last forever, we have a few months of a horrible inversion where the smog is held in between the mountains and it is gloomy and gross (this is always after Christmas when you are "over" winter season anyway). Then ALWAYS we get this false spring weather in February only to go back to winter weather again. You would think that I would be used to it and would KNOW...after all, it has snowed on my birthday (end of April) at least 50% of my years. Still, after a warm day of bbqing, jumping on the trampoline, doing yard work, and yes, planting a few flowers yesterday, I am horrified to find that it SNOWED last night! (Cursing the heavens!)

Well then maybe one day your kids... will move away and break away.
Since no one has moved away before.
Dang, I don't like climes like that either.
Can't stand it.
I don't know how you put up with it.

I like having 4 seasons best. Which is why I love Missouri.

As for winter? I'm done after a couple of good snows. Then I want spring.

I love icky winter weather only because I look better in winter clothes, which hides more than tank tops and shorts, which is the standard uniform here in Houston 8 out of 12 months.

It's one of the main reasons I don't live in Buffalo NY suburbs anymore.
(That and there are no jobs there.)
It always seemed like dealing with snow for the better part of 6 months of the year just took too much energy.
In Virginia we'll get a little snow every once in awhile but it melts off fairly quickly.
Last week we went from a frosty 34 at night and within 2 days jumped to 88 degrees.
It's cooled back down for a bit now (mid 60's) but it won't be long before the AC is on full time again.
I just wish it would hover around 72 degrees for a few weeks before the hot weather sets in for the duration of summer - it would be a nice break on the electric bill.

I laughed at your post, because I have a new friend who moved from Minneapolis 6 months ago. It's going to be 90 here today, and she is having a fit over it. She can't stand this "heat." She was saying she'd rather be back there where it's winter, then deal with this. She is going to die this summer!!! I told her it's 105 degrees and hotter for weeks on end here, and she literally doesn't believe me! It's sunny and warm most of the year here, and there are a lot of people that can't handle it. I love it, actually!

I do hate winter, with a deep passion. I'm just glad it doesn't stick around long in these parts!! I hope you get relief! Sending you sunny thugs!!!

I live in Texas. We very rarely get icky weather. Maybe one or two days with some snow or icy roads. We do get miserable summers though. After weeks of 100+ temperatures, I am OVER summer. Over the mass quantities of sunscreen. OVER checking the slides to make sure they won't burn the kids. OVER sweating. Just done. So it's on the opposite end of the spectrum, but I can relate a bit. At least in our situation we aren't shoveling snow, and we can look forward to breaks during the evening hours.

I can't relate to this today though. I have to admit. It's breezy with a high of 85. The weather her is actually quite lovely today. It's hard for me to fathom snow in April.

I feel for ya! I am from MN, but have lived down here in the south (Chicagoland) since 2001. My MN friends and family were shoveling yesterday while my kids and I were playing in 72' sunshine. My friend sent me a picture of her at the Twins' game at Target Field on Friday. She was in a parka, hat, gloves, seat warmer--looked like she was at a Packer's game, not a Twins game ;-)

But, at least you're not in North Dakota--I've got a few friends there who are having another blizzard today.

ETA: Worst of all--all the outdoor youth sports have been put on hold! Poor kids!!

I'm with you. I'm in Wisconsin. Last week we had grey skies, cold weather, rain or snow or both everyday. UUUGGGGGHHHHHH

I said to son on Friday " Wouldn't you think the the clouds would be empty by now?"

I am so ready for warm weather. Even mid 60's with sunshine whould feel good. Heck just plain old sunshine would feel good.

As soon as the weather breaks I'm throwing my winter boots away! It's in the 60s today, but were expecting your snow in a few days. The kids soccer games were cancelled due to weather, and it's getting tough keeping them penned up. I LOVE Michigan, but this time of the year is usually when we can open windows and start packing up winter clothes!
I do like winter. I'm with Sherri-I'd like it to stay in the winter season.

I remember when it snowed in May down in southern Illinois. The frost date is May 15th for zone 5, but due to global warming, in the last 5 years or so, I act as if it is April 15th. Winter is lingering a bit longer this year. By this time last year, we already had our pool out!

I don't mind winter, but really, I'm all about fall and spring. I'm with you. It's been raining and raining and raining in Chicago. I'm so ready to just be outside.

V. Rae, I have so many friends in MN who are just miserable in this snow. April and snow does not compute. I hope you get some spring relief soon!

I wish we had a winter!!! Our winter sucked....we got MAYBE a total of 4" of snow here in DC - over 4 months...just last week when you were getting pummeled with snow? We hit a 80 year record of 91 degrees in April. We had our A/Cs on....

Wish we could get some snow!! I would personally enjoy it. But then again, I would love to live in Alaska too...I enjoy cold weather. Snow. Rain. Etc.

Take a vacation to a warm spot!! Then you can have some reprieve!! :)

No, no one LIKES it, because it's too gray - it really is starting to affect people's general moods. It changes the activities I do with the kids I work with, so, it does actually make life harder. I've decided to imagine that it's still February! This is perfectly normal for weather, mid-February!

I love winter but this one has been grueling and ridiculously long! The gray days and constant snow are making people (including me) depressed and cranky. But all I can do is take plenty of vitamin D, read my plant catalogs and hope the weather warms up before May.

I will be the lone voice of insanity here. :) I absolutely love winter, and I'm not sick of it yet! I do not like spring or summer (I know, what kind of nut am I?). I hate the heat, the humidity, the storms, the allergies, and the bugs. I "hibernate" in the summer in the A/C and patiently wait for the coolness of fall to arrive. I didn't always wait so patiently - I used to gripe and complain and whine. Then, two years ago I decided to just try to be content with whatever the weather was, because there was absolutely nothing I could do about it anyway! It was amazing how that approach completely changed my mood! This year my goal is to not just refrain from complaining, but to actually be thankful for all I have instead. We'll see how that goes! :)

No, at least not in April, but I have come to expect it as a life-long Minnesotan, except for 5 years in balmy Chicago. I experienced the April 14, 1983 blizzard, also my dad's birthday, so the middle of April is my benchmark for the snow to end for the season. However, this year I am very sad about the weather because my oldest son is a HS baseball player and after doing some spring training in FL for a week they haven't been able to practice outside or play any games and have had 2 weeks worth of games postponed so far. I don't see how they can even get in their season this year. )-:

OK, if I were you, I'd be saying something to the people from warm climates who wrote in about the warm weather they live in, lol! I am with you. I enjoy the snow, but anything below 10 degrees is painful to me. And if it does snow in April (as it did the year DD was born!) it should melt the next day, not stick around as it has!!

Re: the person who told you to consider moving, let me tell you, neither myself nor my husband has blood family around, and I so envy the people who have family they can count on for babysitting, moral support, and advice as they raise their kids. The physical presence of family is nothing to be sneezed at.

Is there anywhere in the country that is 70-80 all year with low humidity and no risks of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes,etc.? (Am I asking too much??) If there is such place, I want to move there!! I'm with ya sista!!

As someone who grew up in MN and has lived in WI now for the past almost 16 years, yeah, the winter weather this year s*cks. Bad. My parents told me MN is mostly covered with snow again. They got a foot where they live near the Cities.

Here in Madison, WI, we don't have any snow but we are wet. Wet, wet, and more wet. My daughter's first lacross game was cancelled last week Weds because the field was too wet to play on, and her game tomorrow has been cancelled because the away field she was to play on is swamped. There might not be any snow standing in the fields around here, but the fields are big lakes of water. It's anyone's guess as to when the farmers will be able to get into their fields to plant this year. Further north there is still snow. Any and all spring sports are having a hard time finding time to practice because of either wet or snow-covered playing fields; not everyone is able to use the gym for practice.

And the temps! Holy moly, is it cold out! I don't do well with cold; I'm completely bundled up most of the winter (and wear wool socks constantly) and also the summer unless it's a HOT day. And I mean hot. If I wear sandals, I almost always wear them with socks. Otherwise my toes freeze off! No kidding.

They're saying that this is the coldest and latest spring we've had in this area of WI in the last 7 years. I want to get outside and get the lawn raked and the flowers, plants, trees, shrubs, etc., ready for summer, but it's too cold outside to start putzing with that. I'm afraid if I work too easy on them that we'll have another freeze or something, and everything will die. I do have tulips poking up out of the ground, and the daffodils along the east side of the house are almost to the point they are going to bloom (hardy little suckers), and a few hardy plants/flowers have started growing, and I just look at them and say, You can make it! Come on, I know spring and the warm weather temps are coming eventually! LOL

I am SO ready for winter to be done this year, it's not even funny. I've even been using my therapy light/UV light to give me some extra sun and help brighten my day. It's been working. Oh! And the sun's out today! YEAH!

Ugh, I'm so sorry. You do have it bad there!
Can you?:
-buy a UV light to help you w/in your home when it gets like this?
-can you get out to the mall? You can walk around & get some exercise
so you don't feel so "couped" up
-plan a 4 day weekend get away to somewhere warm that is not too far
away from you? The planning may help ease your mood. Cut out pics
of tropical places for a Dream Board that you put in plain view. It's to
motivate you to save $ to get there & to lift your spirits.
-put on some Caribbean music on your cable channel to make you think
of a cruise etc
-turn on all the lights in your home to make it feel less gloomy. Get out
some beach balls & leave them out in your living room to make your
think of happier times in warmer climates (don't knock it till you try it) :)
-think about painting a rom or your kitchen a sunny muted yellow
(No need to move, just mental breaks from the cold doldrums).
-good luck & hang in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, we've already had days over 90 degrees this year. You know what I'm sick of? Going from a quasi-winter to summer over night. We really don't get Spring or Fall here, and summer is absolutely dreadful!
