Hey ladies,

I just found out my husband received a promotion. Which is very exciting, I'm so proud of him, of course! The only thing is we're moving out of state, to Tampa, FL. I don't know ANYONE there. This will definetely be an adventure and I'm looking forward to it, but I am pretty nervous. Are any of you ladies familiar with that area? Do any of you have any advice about moving somewhere unfamiliar?

What can I do next?

Good luck! I am jealous...my husband has had a few opportunities for us to move out of state and I chickend out! Go for it!! We did live a few hours away from family a few years back and it was wonderful for our marriage! We grew so close because we only had each to rely on until we met people. Just stay excited and embrace this adventure!

Congratulations! You are embarking on an exciting adventure. I've moved twice in three years TX - NY - KS. None of those places were areas I was familiar with or had friends.

I think the biggest thing is to embrace the adventure part. It helps you stay positive. I would look into anywhere you can find a local playgroup like this site, babycenter, mops groups, etc. Then when I met people I would always make sure they knew I was new to the area. Some will befriend you and others will give you great resources on what to do and where to go. We always visit the local playgrounds and found that a good place to meet people. Preschool for your three year old will be a good place to meet people, too.

I had business cards made up with my phone and email. I can easily hand them out when I meet people. It helps to encourage people to contact you.

In the first few weeks I would try to plan something everyday like finding the grocery store, trying a new playground, finding target, etc. It may have only been for an hour but it got us out with people. A GPS is really good for a new area, too.

Good luck and enjoy! LA

Hi J.,

First off, congrats to your husband on his promotion! What a wonderful opportunity, especially in this economy.

I am very familiar with the Tampa area. You will LOVE it! So close to some of the best beaches in America. Great activities for children. You'll love the weather in the winter (summer is just like the summer's here - hot and humid).

Yes, we have moved from a different state, back when we first got married and I was pregnant with my first child, 13 years ago. Do what you can to find friends with similar interest - join a church, a mom's group, enroll your kids in activities, etc.

Best wishes to you! It may be a little hard at first, but hang in there and find all those great things to do in Tampa, and soon you'll feel right at home!!

S. :)
