I'm Looking for a Milkman and a Farmers Market

I'm looking for a milkman! Are there any dairy farms in the area that deliver milk, and other goodies? Also a good farmers market in the area. I'm learning to cook and trying to get the family to eat healthier, one thing I have learned is that if I can stay out of a store I buy much better! :)

What can I do next?

We did oberweiss and loved it. About the comment that it tastes old and off - the milk is actually something like 48 hours from cow to door, so that odd taste is actually probably a much more fresh taste than we're accustomed to.

I really like door to door organics for delivered produce while the farmers markets aren't available chicago.doortodoororganics.com
You pick the size of delivery and can substitute out things your family won't eat. They also have an online market where you can add more items. There isn't any dairy or meat yet, but they have several other items besides produce. We've been doing it for a few months now, and our fruit/veg consumption has gone up because we know more is coming, and we don't want to waste anything :)

I think Oberweis is gross, personally. Even their ice-cream tastes old and "off" to me, but I know some people who love it.

We get our milk directly from a farm in Glen Ellyn. I'm relatively new to the area, so not sure where Des Plaines is, but there are great Weston A. Price groups on Yahoo Groups and meetup.com that can tell you where to get milk, sometimes it's a local pickup rather than delivery.

You can find CSAs and Farmer's Markets here:

localharvest.org
eatwild.com

You are definitely on the right track!

Hope you will stop by my blog too... we're still learning, but eating whole foods is definitely improving our health.

Overweis delivers milk, milk products and a few other things to my area. I think you can determine if they deliver in your area via their website:

Hi A.,

My parents (who live in Evanston) have used Oberweis Dairy -- www.oberweisdairy.com -- and were happy with the quality of the milk. You may be able to return the bottles at Whole Foods, in addition to putting them out for the milk delivery person.

Most farmers markets in the area are seasonal and don't open until May or June. There is one at the Des Plaines Senior Center. The only year-round market is the Green City Market (www.greencitymarket.org) in Lincoln Park (in the city). The Skokie Farmer's Market (on Sundays during the summer until the end of Oct.) is also nice.

There are also CSA's (community supported agriculture) that deliver to central locations in various neighborhoods.

Then there are services like Irv & Shelley's Fresh Picks (www.freshpicks.com) and Ripe Organics (www.ripeorganics.com) that will deliver organic (local, if possible) vegetables to your home.

Best,
R.
