Hi! I am hoping to become pregnant at some time in the near future and I would love to have the baby with the help of a midwife, like I did with my daughter in Canada. The thing is, in Canada health care is all covered so I didn't have to pay out of pocket for a midwife, and to be honest I am not sure yet how everything works here. Can anyone tell me, are there midwives that work with certain health insurance companies, or are there programs that assist?? The thought of giving birth in a hospital is blechhh for me, I gave birth to my daughter at the midwife clinic and I would hope to have my future babies at home...Actually, any alternatives to a hospital birth would be welcome, such as birthing centers or whatever may exist in the area. But the key thing is, I can't pay loads of money for the services, We simply don't have it. I thank you all in advance for any information you can send my way!
Take care!

I think they are the best homebirth practice here in San Francisco. Very low routine intervention. Wonderful care, wonderful births. I have witnessed two of them. Lots of loving care and herbal support are the hallmarks of an Awakenings birth. They brew the most incredible birth compress solutions- specifically designed for you. They are really fantastic midwives and follow the midwifery model. They only take a few births per month and both midwives attend. These women really get to know you during your 1.5 hour pre-natals.

hi S., i dont know of any birthing centres, but i delivered my son at kaiser permanente in walnut creek which is run by only midwives and 1 doctor on duty. you can also get all your prenatal care at walnut creek but it wouldnt be guaranteed that the midwife you see would be working when you are in labor. they have tours there every week, you should check it out - i guess it depends if you have kaiser as your health coverage though. goodluck. hey S.,

my name is V., and i actually live in alameda which is really close to oakland, but there is a mid-wife across the street from alameda city hall...she's great and she offers lamaze classes as well when it comes close to that time. short on the money? well you can apply for emergency medi-cal which may help cover the expenses while your pregnant.
