My sweet neice had a similar problem and was diagnosed with a larger than normal colon. So I agree with the others that it sounds like your pedi needs to be involved here. It is treatable if it is what my neice has. Good luck!

My 4 yr old son will come to me without underware on and say he "poopooed" a little in his underwear. We have never had issues with going in his underware until now. The other day I found him hiding and he almost looked scared. He will go just a little in his underware before he goes in the pottie. When this happens sometimes his bowel movement is running and sometimes it normal. I'm afraid he has bowel issues and either can't control the "leaking" and runs to the bathroom or it happens when he "toots". Is there anything a doctor can do for me? Have any of you mother dealt with this issue? Is there something I can do for him?
Thank you for all the mom's that took the time out of their day to reply back to me. Bryce is not hiding anymore but continuing to "poop" a little in his underwear. We are going to take him in to see the doctor and I'm watching his milk intake and giving him a soluble fiber every morning. I have never punished him for this and he understands this not normal or "okay" to do on purpose so I believe him when he says it was an accident! :) More on this issue once we get back from the doctor...

Surprisingly, it's quite possible he is constipated and the leakage is what is making it out around the blockage. When my daughter went through this, the ped had us give her a high dose of Miralax for a week and then a maintenance dose daily for another week. The ped said there would be "plugs" we'd see in the loose stools and she was right. Aparently the intestines can get hard little plugs which make a comfortable bowel movement impossible. Then the poor kid starts to fear and avoid bowel movements which makes it even worse. You have to break the cycle. Now I really watch her and when she hasn't gone in a couple of days I just give her a 1/2 teaspoon of Miralax in her chocolate milk and by the next day the problem is solved. Good luck!
Check with your son's pediatrician, and if he can't figure out what might be the cause, have him/her refer you to a pediatric gastroenterologist. In your son's case, just make absolutely sure that you or any of his caregivers do not show anger or that you are upset with him for these occasions. Since he is "hiding", and trying to get to the bathroom as fast as he can, it's obvious to me that it is indeed an issue that a doctor needs to check out.
Good Luck and Best Wishes!

V.,
It sounds like your son has encopresis. See this website or Google the term for more information:

It is caused by chronic constipation...and most of us don't even realize our kids were constipated! My daughter has struggled with this. If you would like to know what we did to help her, please feel free to write me back at ____@____.com
Just know that he can't help it...they often don't even feel the poop coming out, and it is very distressing for everyone!
I myself have that problem. First thing you should do is reassure him he is not bad. Also... see your sons doctor. It sounds like he may have a problem with loose stool. What I had to do was change my diet. Reducing rough fiber, and adding soluble fiber to my diet helped a lot. He could also be showing signs of milk intolerance. Neither of these problems I mention are life threatening. Also, this may only be a temporary problem, so don't panic.
