I'm really confused if I should get the flu shot. I have 2 other children, 1 that attends school and 1 that is just turning 3. I did have them recieve their flu shots last week for the saftey of them bringing something into the house. Should I also get one now? Is it to late for me to get one? I'm planning on breastfeeding, is that going to effect the baby if I have it soon? Do they recomend giving flu shots to newborns? I havn't yet spoken to my doctor about getting one but I have a bad feeling about getting one this late in the pregnancy. Would like to hear all opinions...Thanks Moms!

What can I do next?

Im pregnant as well and my mom is a pediatric nurse. You should have a flu shot as long as you are over the 1st trimester( which you are). I believe your newborn will get one as well

My Doc had me get one while around 30 some weeks...
My little one is 5 months old and my doc now made me get one for this season.
I do breasfeed and she said that didn't matter.
She said it was really important because I have an infant, to protect myself against the flu.
As soon as she turns 6 months they want me to bring her back in for one.
So I think your doc will tell you to go ahead.
I would check, but I am pretty sure these days all docs recommened them!
Good luck!!!

YES! It is recommended for pregnant women who are in their second and third trimester--I'm surprised your Dr. has not suggested it already. I even read that it is ok in the first trimester, but most docs will wait 'til later. I would get it from your O.B. That way, you can be sure to get the therimisol (ie; mercury)-free one. You are going in every week now, anyway, so bring it up. (You can do a google search on the risks of the flu on a pregnant woman).

Flu shots are recommended for babies 6mo-around 36 months, so not for newborns (and what would happen if for some reason b-feeding did not work out?). Not to make you feel guilty, it's your decision, and I am pro-immunizations. Good luck!

I am a birth doula, and although I am not a doctor or nurse, I would recommend you wait. They do not give flu shots to babies because their are several allergy concerns, which aren't such a big deal while pregnant, but can be while breastfeeding. How very exciting for you to be so close...I just had my third in July....it's wonderful! Not sure if you have thought about using a doula, but I am I in the Aurora area if you ever do need any help. Have a beautiful birth!

anyone can get the flu shot anytime from october to december and still see positive results. why not wait a few weeks and get it in november once you've delivered? i do not believe it's harmful to baby if you're nursing, and doctors prefer that you, as the care provider, are protected against the flu (husband and other children too) - especially since your newborn can't get a flu shot until 6 months old (at the earliest).

ALWAYS talk to your OB - it may be perfectly safe as of right now, but again, once you've delivered, there's no reason why you shouldn't get one then.

congrats on the baby! best to you and your family.

I know it's recommended in the middle trimester. I don't think it's recommended in the 3rd trimester, but I might be wrong. They aren't recommended for babies under 6 months. We have a high risk kid that needed the family and himself to get it, but the baby, now 3 months is not allowed to get it even in a high risk situation. Since you'll be nursing, the baby will be just fine. Congratulations!

Hi J. - you should have a flu shot unless it is contraindicated by your doc. You will probably be required to submit a doctors note at the flu shot clinic. It is only in early stages of pregnancy that one is not recommended.

As for the baby - Your baby will not receive a flu shot until your son is at least 6 months old - the first time he will receive 2 shots about a month apart. Then he will get one shot every year after that.

I could imagine that it would be very difficult for you if you contracted the flu while you were in late stages of your pregnancy or caring for a newborn.

congratulations on your coming attraction!
