A drive-thru grocery. There are sooo many times i just need milk or bread and don't feel like taking all 4 kids into the grocery store. I would stock pantry/fridge staples and there would be something like a 5 item limit. I really wish we had something like that around here.

I would like to say microbrewery because that would be fun. I know I would go back and get my doctorate in psych and help kids with ADHD. That would be fun as well but I think more frustrating, ya know?

i would open a plus-size beachwear shop. not just fat girl swimsuits, but elegant beach dresses, fun colorful print coverups, hats, jewelry, etc. all plus sized. i LOVE our beach town that we visit (that my extended family lives in and i have visited about 20 times in my 34 years, even lived there for 5 years lol) BUT of course, all the adorable little shops on the boardwalk and all up and down the beach, stop about at size 5. grr.

If I were handed $100K to start any kind of business?
Do I need to pay taxes on that $100K? Or is this $100K AFTER taxes?

If after taxes...I would open a consulting business that encompasses my husband's Operations Analysis, our combined experience in resume writing (it's REALLY needed!! people don't know how to put a resume together) and my recruiting....

I would use the money to:
get access to more boards to find more candidates...
pay for travel to clients not here in DC who would use our business
pay for the business license, insurance, get a P.O. box and rent space for a professional look, etc.
MAYBE if there was enough left over after business cards, etc. I would upgrade the computers and printer...

An health food store featuring as many locally grown items as possible. I already have a location picked out!
Mabey after our three existing businesses profit us 100K I can make that dream a reality!
I would also like to moonlight as a personal chef for people with difficult dietary needs. It's stressful to cook for special dietary needs when you are already swamped with daily life. Unfortunately, my small town doesn't lend itself to needing that type of service.

Great question!

Professional Assassin?

I was just running some numbers the other day as a thought exercise (ADHD at play, I was supposed to be cleaning my house), and it occurred to me the tremendous expense of "staying hidden". I mean, equipment alone would run 30-40k easily, and then O. needs secure internet, burner phones out the tucus, off the grid bank accounts (who won't even talk to you without serious money in play), plane tickets, transportation, safe houses, ID, grease. And that's assuming you don't have kids you need to also deck out and keep hidden.

Really, though, I wouldn't start a business. I'd use it to pay living expenses and tuition.

I've always wanted to have my own school (partial boarding partial dayschool... in the British style) specifically for ADHD kids... but the startup costs there are in the millions. I've run those numbers quite seriously. I've wanted that school since I was 14.

--------

Hey Jo! I'll start the school, you can be the staff psychologist!!
((I'm also paying my staff through the nose and providing housing in town in my imaginary school. 6 figures to start.)) And what school doesn't need a brew pub? Well, probably most, but not this O.. This O. needs O. bad.

well, I already have a photography business, but I don't have a studio. I go on location and to my clients homes. So, if I had that kind of money, then I would build a really nice studio. I mostly work with newborns, so I would have a nice comfy couch for the parents to sit and relax, a rocking chair, TV, book shelf, fireplace, a small kitchen area so my clients can have water or tea to drink and have cookies out or something. Then it would have the studio area, and then it would also have a small office where I can do all my editing and business work.

I would incorporate the funds into the current company we own and expand it. Possibly fund a manufacturing location.

Keep in mind $100,000 is not that much money when starting up a business. We've invested way more in our company from personal finances.

Well, I would open several businesses. All 3 of them, my dreams.

I would buy a nice DSLR camera and 5 different backdrops for my photography business.

I would open a horse rescue/training center, mostly taking abused or abandoned horses and retraining and rehoming them but also taking in a few horses that just have O. or two areas that need to be worked on before they are sent back to their owners (Example: Horses with a fear of trailers).

Then I would use whatever was left to take some time off of work so I could sit down and finish my damn book! Lol
