I both investigate fraud and manage an agency travel card program. I would recommend that you have your bank cancel your account number, then reopen another with a new account number. It may sound a little inconvenient right now, but at least you will have a fresh start up account. Now you know what not to do, you should be okay. In the future, when purchasing online, use a credit card with a high credit balance. If there is any activity you didn't approve, it is easier to cancel or dispute purchases. What is the difference between a debit card and credit card for online purchases? Although not 100% fool proof, a credit card is always safer to use. Especially if the credit card has a high balance, the card authorization should be declined. Another fail safe; you can predesignate a set spending limit to you credit card authorization by contacting your bank or go to your credit card web page and edit your spending limits. No one should be able to access that amount of money from your accounts. The most that could be stolen from mine is $500.00, however it can be recovered if it is a credit card. A debit card is more difficult to control if someone else has access to it. You should also get a police report and send a copy, with report number to US Secret Service or FBI in your local region. Both agencies (USSS has lead) investigate overseas and commerce thefts and in most cases, $1000.00 is considered grand theft. Contact your local United States Attorney's office for guidance.
