Ideas to Get 8 Month Old to Sleep Through the Night

My 8 month old daughter will not sleep through the night in her crib. We have a good bedtime routine of diaper change, nursing, rocking and singing lullabies and then I put her in her crib around 7:30. I almost always put her down drowsy, but awake and typically, at most, she'll cry for a minute, then go to sleep. She might wake and fuss a little periodically, but she puts herself right back to sleep - until about 1am. After that, she'll start screaming until we pick her up. Sometimes we find her on her hands and knees, rocking and sometimes she has pulled herself up into a standing position. My husband brings her into bed with us (we started with a family bed) and I nurse her. She always latches on well and seems to be hungry. I've tried letting her cry it out when she wakes up in the middle of the night, but she'll scream for over an hour, which is difficult when we both work and have to get up early, not to mention letting her cry it out doesn't seem to work. I would love any suggestions on getting her to sleep through the night...or even assurances that it's not completely abnormal for an 8 month old to not be sleeping through the night.

What can I do next?

Hey J.,
Every baby is different as far as when they start sleeping through the night. My daughter didn't sleep through until she was around 8 or 9 months old but I know babies who started sleeping through the night the first day home! I would agree to maybe try some cereal before bedtime. She will eventually start sleeping on her own.

I am not sure how long you let her cry it out for but unfortunetly this is how it works she will eventually go to sleep unless she is hungry or needs something. I just went through this except my daughter was 14 months I never thought she would stop crying but eventually she did I would just check on her make sure she new mommy was there. But try feeding her then put her back in crib and maybe then you can let her cry without feeling guilty. Good luck

Dear J.,
You could always postpone bedtime until like 8:00pm,
but if you dont want to break her routine, how about trying some cearel 1/2 hour before bedtime. It might fill her up enough until morning. Otherwise it sounds like you are doing
a great job as a first time mother. Hope I helped. Good luck

One word... Oceanwonders from pfisher price.. if you don't have one... get one... my son started sleeping through the night right away with that... he learned quickly how to turn it on by himself and when he woke up in the middle of the night he's start it himself and go back to bed,.,.. now my daughter doesn't have one because he wont give it up.. she's 9 1/2 months and still gets up at night... i'll be investing in one just for her if she doesn't start sleeping though the night herself... that thing is the single greatest invention ever for new parents
