Looking for inexpensive, original, quick, creative ideas for son's in-class b-day celebration. He is in the 3rd grade & will be turning 9 in the summer. There are 9 other kids in the class with summer b-days, so there will be many days over the next couple weeks that the kids will be eating sweets, etc. I want to do something more original, perhaps a craft that they can take home. It can't take too much time however. Does anyone have any great, memorable, fun ideas?

What can I do next?

One of the girls in my daughter's class brought in treat bags. The kind like you hand out at birthday parties with misc toys, notepads, etc.
At my daughter's last birthday, instead of plastic treat bags, I bought plastic sand bucket & shovel sets at Party City which were less than $1 each.

before doing anything at all you need to talk to the school and see what the guidelines are. most schools will allow you to send a treat. and thats it. nothing at all that is going to take any time in the day. most also now have rules about the treat being store bought. no homemade goodies. also check about allergies etc. it used to be so much easier to just make cupcakes and send them. we always send rice crispie treats now since there are no nuts or chocolate in them.

I have found that Smencils (scented pencils - chocolate, cinnamon, bubble gum, different fruits, etc.) are very popular. I know several schools that sell these during the school year as a fundraiser, and they typically sell out! There are several sites you can check out. Just Google smencils, and you will see them all! Pretty inexpensive. Have fun!

I recommend for the cake, cupcakes with his favorite characters on each cake. I would also recommend asking your son what 'he' would like for his classroom party, he just might give you some really cool insights of what he wants. And since it'll be what he likes and wants, your son will always remember it! You just never know...brainstorm at home. Your son also can help you as in what his classmates 'like'! Good luck! :)

This may be too young as my son is only 6 and we have done this two year already...but it is still fun.,,

Take an envelope and write each child's name on it in dark sharpy.

Take a baking sheet, line it with foil, and then put it on medium to low on the stove. Then we take some old crayons and swirl designs on it and place an envelope to soak up the design. You will need to gently blot or press the back of the envelope with a paper towel and then gently peel the envelope up. It doesn't need to be down for more than a few seconds total. Lighter colours work better otherwise they overwhelm the name.

Also, make sure you hold the adhesive side of the evelope up while you blot the back to soak up the colours, or you will actually heat seal the envelope!

Once cooled, you can then fill the envelopes with items, seal them up with a sticker on the back, and then pass them out at school.

Items can be from a party or dollar store:
Fancy pencils
Erasers
Stickers
Tattoos (be careful, some parents are not thrilled with these)
Seeds
Candy
etc

You will want to verify with the teacher that the above is, indeed, ok. Since my son's birthday is on February 14th, we combine it with Valentines.

I make a banana bread that my kid's love so for their birthdays I make a double batch and that is what they bring in to school. I prearrange it beforehand w/ the reachers so you need to find out what his teacher's policy is. My daughter is now in 8th grade and her friends still get excited when I bring the banana bread in!

Our school only allows bday treats at lunch time in the cafeteria. I usually just send in decorated sugar cookies, or a box of hostess individually wrapped snacks and napkins. This way its easy for my son to carry it all on the bus.

You could have a Pirate Theme and have the kids make there own pirate hats or masks. And for a game have a dressing race, They have 2 teams if the teams are not even you or hubby go on that team. Everyone has to run to the treasure chest and put on a hat, eye cup, shorts, shirt, boots, and a belt. Run to the team members then back to the chest undress put them in the chest and then the next kid has to do the same thing. The team that wins receives a prize. IT IS SO MUCH FUN AT THAT AGE!!! We did this for our daughter nut w/ a Barbie theme. And the kids got a kick out of the hubby running in heels!! HAHAHHAHHa !REALLY LOL
